Section 1 Comprehension I (12 marks)

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions in complete sentences.

The Science of Sleep

Did you know that you will spend a quarter (四分之一) of your life sleeping? We all know
that sleep is crucial (重要的) and that a bad night’s sleep can affect (影響) our performance the
next day; but what exactly happens to our bodies when we are asleep, and why do we need to
sleep at all?

The simple answer is that nobody is precisely (準確地) sure of the reason why humans
sleep. Scientists have been investigating (調查) this issue for hundreds of years but as yet have
not been able to reach a conclusion (結論). Some experts believe that sleep gives our bodies the
opportunity (機會) to recover (恢復) from the physical activity (體力活動) that we do during
the day. However, some others are doubtful (懷疑的) of this theory, as the amount of energy
saved by sleeping for 8 hours is only about 50 calories – the same amount of energy contained
(包含) in one piece of toast (吐司)!

Although nobody can give a scientific (科學的) explanation for the necessity (必要性) of
sleep, it is evident (明顯的) that we find it hard to function (運行) without it. A lack of sleep can
have a serious effect (影響) on our brain; after just one night without any sleep, our
concentration deteriorates (專注力下降) and our attention span (注意廣度) shortens. If we
continue not to get enough sleep, the part of our brain that controls language, memory and
awareness (意識) of time starts to shut down. Research (研究) has shown that people who are
deprived of (剝奪) sleep have a lot of difficulty responding to changes and they often struggle to
make important decisions.

There is no set amount of time that everyone needs to sleep, since it varies (不同) from person to
person. Research indicates (顯示) that people like to sleep anywhere between 5 and 11 hours, with
the most popular time being 7.75 hours. The current (現在的) world record for the longest period
without sleep is 11 days, set by Randy Gardner in 1965. Four days into the research, he began
hallucinating (產生幻覺). This was followed by a delusion (妄想) where he thought he was a

1
famous footballer. Surprisingly, Randy was actually functioning quite well at the end of his
research and he could still beat the scientist at pinball (彈珠台).
