FREEDOM OF THE HUMAN PERSON
Freedom: is an intrinsic and essential property of the person. This means that the human person by
nature is a free being and that it is in his or her nature to seek freedom. An important indication of
human freedom is the ability to make choices and perform actions. Our freedom to act sets us apart
from other beings.
Freedom : is experienced through the act of making choices. Although human freedom gives us the
ability to think of countless decisions and possible actions, we only get to choose to enact one
of these possible actions or decisions, and also to not take any action
Two concepts that will help us fully understand freedom:
1. Freedom itself According to Merriam Dictionary, it is the quality or state of being free. It is our
capacity to choose of what we wanted and an inner awareness of what is right and wrong that is
traced to our free will according to Aristotle. It is also an intrinsic and an essential property of a
human person which basically means, it is a part of our human nature.
Example: Think of yourself as a student, your teacher told you to study your lessons for the day for
you will have a long quiz the next meeting. However, as you reached home you find yourself having
a good time doing Facebook and online chatting with your friends. Using your freedom, you can
either choose to follow your teacher’s advice to study your lessons for your quiz the next morning or
continue doing the thing which you find enjoyable.
2. Free will Our free will allows us to decide on things we do depending on the situation. It is our
ability to choose between two different possible courses of action, independently. Simply put it,
free will is our ability to choose things according to our moral reasoning.
Kinds of Freedom
1 The. Physical Freedom It refers to the absence of any physical restraint and the freedom of
mobility to act and go whatever, whenever and wherever he or she pleases.
2. Psychological Freedom It is also called the freedom of choice. The person is free to perform
actions that he or she considers right and wise. A person is also free to act or not to act. No outside
force or influence can compel a person to take action against his or her will.
3. Moral Freedom This refers to using freedom in a manner that upholds human dignity and
goodness. A person becomes freer when he or she uses freedom well but becomes less free when
he or she uses it in a bad way. Humans have a natural inclination for what is true and good and
when a person uses his or her freedom to do acts that violate human dignity and goodness, he or
she dehumanizes himself or herself and effectively negates human freedom.
What makes us free? How does
freedom shape our
experiences?
Voluntariness and responsibility
are the two elements that define
freedom.

are the two elements that define freedom.
Voluntariness refers to the ability
of a person to act out of his or her
own free will
and self-determination, which
means that a person may decide to
act or not to act
out of free will. Voluntariness also
means that a person may act even
he or she is
not required or called to take
action. Voluntary acts are free acts
which can be
assigned a corresponding moral
value.

Voluntariness also means that a person may act even he or she is not required or called to take
action. Voluntary acts are free acts which can be assigned a corresponding moral value.
Take for example, a man saving a
little boy about to get hit by an
approaching car.
He did not have to save the boy but
out of morality, he did save the
boy.

Responsibility, refers to the person being accountable for his or her actions and their consequences.
Taking responsibility can either mean a person voluntarily taking responsibility for his or her actions,
or being held responsible by other people.
Voluntariness and responsibility
go hand-in-hand in determining
a person’s
freedom. A person may be forced
to act against his or her will and it
follows that he
or she may or may not be held
accountable for such involuntary
actions. A person
forced by bank robbers to open the
safety vault may not be responsible
for the crime
of robbery but a person without
awareness on the effect of his or
her actions, like
when a girl is trying to scare her
friend who panicked when
surprised and got injured
should realize that the injury
happened due to not fully
considering the consequence
of her act

THE GIVEN AND THE CHOSEN
• Choice is indeed an element of freedom, but freedom goes beyond mere choosing.
• Freedom is not absolute, and in our lives, there are a lot of things that we could not choose.
Example: We are not given a choice if we wanted to be born, we were simply given life.
• Many things are given. Although some things are given, it does not mean that we do not really
have freedom but there are instances when we cannot exercise our freedom because we are not
determined by these forces or situations.
• The <givens= or predetermined things do not negate our freedom when we determine ourselves.
• The key idea is that we should always act well in any given situation.
• We can transcend our tendencies and inclinations and determine ourselves in the manner that we
want.
• We must use our freedom in a good way to become better people and versions of ourselves for
our sake and of others.

Activity 3` –Evaluate and exercise prudence in choices. Analyze the following situation and give
your recommendation on how to exercise freedom responsibly. Remember to discuss about
freedom and responsibility, choices have consequences and some things are given up while others
are obtained in making choices.

appears to be full of cash as well as several Identification Cards of the owner. Bert knows he was
