This document provides a lesson plan for using multimedia tools to teach 9th/10th grade algebra concepts involving polynomial operations. Students will independently create multimedia presentations demonstrating their understanding of adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials. They will have autonomy in choosing how to visually represent these concepts. The project aims to engage students and allow them to demonstrate competency with both polynomials and multimedia authoring tools. It is designed to incorporate principles of universal design for learning by catering to different learning styles and means of expression.

Importance of Utilizing multimedia authoring tools empowers students to actively
Technology engage in their learning process by choosing and designing how they represent polynomial operations visually. The project could theoretically be completed without technology, but the visual and interactive elements significantly enhance students' ability to demonstrate competency and deepen their understanding of polynomial operations. Besides multimedia tools, graphing software or online polynomial calculators may support learning. Internet Safety and Possible issues include access to online resources and potential Student Privacy exposure to inappropriate content. To mitigate risks, use reputable websites, ensure safe search settings, and monitor students’ online activity. Communication with parents/administrators about safety measures and adherence to school policies is crucial. Universal Design The activity aligns with UDL principles by offering various multimedia Rationale tools, catering to different learning styles. It supports engagement by allowing students to actively choose and design their visual representations, represents content visually and verbally, and offers multiple means of expression through multimedia creation. Lesson Idea Students, as empowered learners, will leverage multimedia authoring tools to actively choose and create presentations illustrating polynomial operations. They will independently explore and decide how to represent polynomial addition, subtraction, and multiplication while demonstrating competency in the chosen technology tool. Teachers will introduce the project by reviewing polynomial operations, demonstrating sample multimedia presentations, and providing guidance on tool usage. The project may take 2-3 class periods. Assessments will evaluate presentations for the depth of understanding, creativity, and the clarity of mathematical concepts conveyed. Presentations will be used for peer learning and as exemplars for future reference. Extension activities might involve exploring complex polynomials or applying operations to real-world scenarios. The lesson will conclude with presentations and discussions showcasing student work. Feedback will be given through rubrics assessing visual representation, mathematical accuracy, and overall presentation quality. Design Reflection The activities designed empower students to actively engage in their learning process by choosing and creating multimedia representations of abstract concepts. To further extend the lesson, additional activities could involve collaborative presentations or analyzing peer projects. Other technology tools like Desmos or GeoGebra could enhance understanding by offering interactive polynomial graphing features.
