That’s right! Through these words, Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is
coined. According to UNESCO, Media and Information Literacy is the ability of people
to interpret and make informed judgements on the information that they consume.
It can be understood as a total of motivation, knowledge, skills and habits that help
to find one’s bearings in the digital world, which is spreading globally.
Through MIL, it will help you to become skillful creators and producers of
information and media messages in your own right.
Let’s see how much you have grown in these past weeks learning Media and
Information Literacy. Continue to the next section.
What’s New
Ordzhonikidze, Grigory (2013) Executive Secretary of the Russian National
Commission for UNESCO stated that personal media and information literacy greatly
determines the implementation of the rights to quality education and life with dignity
as information and communication technologies are developing swiftly and
information flows are swelling and getting ever more sophisticated.
Following his idea, answer the checklist below to know your media and
information literacy level.

Adopted from Media and Information Self-Assessment Question
Scoring Method
You can add up the points for each response above:
47- 55: You seem to have an exceptional ability
40-46: Your score indicates very good ability
32-39: You have shown fair ability
25-31: You score highlights the areas in which you might need improvement
1-24: Your total shows that there are various areas in which you might need guidance and coaching .
How is your score? Did you perform well? Do not be sad. UNESCO also defines
literacy that involves a continuum of learning for individuals to achieve their goals,
develop their knowledge potentially and participate fully in community and wider
society. So, there are plenty of rooms for you to learn. Today is the big step.
What Is It
Media and Information Literacy (MIL) are
indispensable for social progress in the present-
day world. An individual and a community should
possess relevant information about themselves,
their physical environment and social milieu, and
use such information to the greatest possible
effect if they are to arrange their life reasonably
and efficiently meet personal and social
challenges.

well as the conditions under which these functions can be performed; and
4. are able to create knowledge and share it widely as well as know how to

What’s More
Activity 1. Business Dealings in Social Media
The impact of social media on businesses, both positive and negative, is
immense. Either you are a startup or a small business owner, or engaged in an online
store or an enterprise, social media is vital for your business marketing strategy.
Study the graph below to find out how media and information creates better business

8
Guide Questions:
1. What information above can be used in businesses?
2. How can businesses use the information above?
3. How does it change the way businesses are done now?
Very good! Nowadays it is common to see businesses use social media to know
where their customers are, to find out ways to target their audience based on those
channels and to identify social media strategies.
Activity 2. Education Online
There are a number of technological developments that already change our
societies and can no longer be ignored in the context of literacy. Online Learning has
become the new paradigm in education.
Carefully analyze the online advertisement below. Using your MIL skills, find
out the improvement made in education. See to it that you explain it in your own
words in 1-2 sentences.
Guide Questions:
1. What information is conveyed in the advertisement?
2. How does internet change the way people learn?
3. How does it affect quality of education?
Indeed! An online education allows the sharing of expertise that helps more
people have access to education that is not readily available in certain geographic
locations.
Activity 3. Political Participation
Social Media has rapidly grown in importance as a forum for political activism
in its different forms. Examine the picture below to discover how social media create
9
greater political participation. See to it that you explain it in your own words in 1-2

Source: https://preview.tinyurl.com/y4flca73
Very True! Social media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube
provide new ways to stimulate citizen engagement in political life, where elections
and electoral campaigns have a central role. Sad note, though, online political
engagement is largely restricted to people already active in politics and on the
Internet. Other audiences are less responsive.

content using appropriate technology;
◼ understand and know their information and media rights and their
responsibility for demanding free, independent and diverse information and
media systems;
◼ understand the role and functions of information providers and media, as well
as the conditions under which these functions can be performed; and
◼ are able to create knowledge and share it widely as well as know how to engage
