II. Project Summary

Project DEAR (Dapresians: Engaging and Activating Reading skills) is an
intervention program that addresses the needs of our learners in reading. In this program,
learners undergo two-months intensive reading engagement in order to improve their reading
skills both in English and Filipino.

The teachers asked consent from the parents regarding the scheduling of reading
program. The said program done before or after classes to avoid class interruption.

The teachers from Grades I-VI will created their own reading materials based on the
reading level and needs of the learners. Such reading materials are localized so that the
readers can easily adopt to the stories and passages they are reading.

Each story has vocabulary words to be unlocked and comprehension questions to be

answered by the learners. Additional activities that were enjoyed by the learners such as book
mark making, painting and others were done during the implementation of the program.

III. Project Background

Reading is the key to skillful learning of every individual. The learners who read well
develop better understanding. When the learners understand what they read they could
identify, classify, build, organize, synthesize, make adjustments and arrived at proper
decisions.

In congruence with the reading program of the Municipality of Indang, entitled
Project REFIL (Reading Enhancement for Indang Learners), Dr. Alfredo Pio de Roda
Elementary

School has come up with the underlying Reading Program as an action to be taken to ensure
that no child will be left behind and that each will eventually become adequate reader.

Results of Pre-test Phil IRI of School Year 2019-2020 show that 52 pupils from
Grades 1-6 fall under frustration level in Filipino while 89 pupils fall under frustration in
English out of the total school population of 217.

The results indicate that there is a need for innovation in order to address the needs of
Dapresians in reading comprehension and improve their reading skills both in English and
Filipino.

IV. Objectives

The program aims:

 To lessen the number of struggling readers in English and Filipino at the end of
School Year 2019-2020;

Project DEAR (Dapresians: Engaging and Activating Reding skills) is a program that
caters the needs of every Dapresian to improve reading skill while enjoying it. The program
focused on the engagement in reading localized reading materials made by the teachers of
Dr. Alfredo Pio de Roda Elementary School . This was done so the learners can easily adopt
with the situations in the story they have read.

5
After the implementation of the program, it was noticed that pupils became more
engaged in reading and they enjoyed reading. The program may continue its implementation
for the next school year so genuine love for reading of Dapresians will not stop.
