Lesson Plan: Novel


This lesson plan accompanies Pathway to English: Chapter 9 Overall, It’s an Excellent Movie.

This lesson is suitable for students at the senior high school grade 3.

Lesson Goals
1. To understand the novel
2. To practice using planning strategies
3. To increase students understanding about novel

Warmer (Copy part of the story or novel 1 paragraph of the novel for 20 mins
each group and include resources)

 Ask students to read or listen about the life/background of the 5 mins T-S
novel.
 Ask students to discuss in groups regarding the title suggested 10 mins T-S
by the teacher.
 Ask students to make general predictions about the story on a
novel given by the teacher. 2 mins T-S
 Ask students to predict the genre of the novel. 2 mins T-S
 Students are asked to find an important lexical in the story and
then match the word with their own definition. 6 mins S-S

Main activities (copies of Resource 2, 3 and 4 for individuals) 45 mins

 Ask students to find difficult vocabulary (unfamiliar


vocabulary) in the novel. 15min T-S

 Determine the list of adjectives that match the


characters based on the novel, then sort the characters 15 mins S-S
in the novel story and students are asked to write
different characters for each character.

 Students are asked to fill in the correct tenses in the part


of the verb that has been left blank by the teacher and 15 mins T-S then S
then students compare it with the original text in the
novel.

Extension activity (copies of marks and results pages 107/108 and 25 mins
Resource 5 for individuals)
 Students debate about the results of discussions that focus on
controversial points on questions that have been raised by the 10 mins S-S
teacher.

 Students are asked to write several paragraphs using a certain T-S then S
story style and then students write story reviews. 10 mins

 Students discuss about the novel then do a role-play or act out a


scene in the novel then summarize the value of the story. 5 mins S-S
