Liver

1. The liver receives blood from two sources - the hepatic artery and the portal vein. The hepatic artery supplies oxygenated blood while the portal vein supplies blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen. 2. The liver performs many functions including metabolism, glycogen storage, plasma protein synthesis, and detoxification. Liver function tests evaluate enzymes and proteins to detect liver damage or disease. 3. Elevated levels of AST and ALT indicate liver cell damage, often from viral hepatitis, alcohol, or toxic drugs. Bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase levels rise with bile duct problems or liver cell damage and death.
