Conventional Sucker Rod Running Procedure SWI
Conventional Sucker Rod Running Procedure SWI
Conventional Sucker Rod Running Procedure SWI
ALS-APG-Land
Steps
Do the pre-job meeting and review the HARC for PCP Installation
After attaching a 10-foot pony rod or full sucker rod, suspend the rotor above the
rod table
STEPS
Begin lowering the rotor into the well. Using new lubricating grease or motor oil,
lubricate the entire rotor while the rotor is being lowered. This will prevent the rotor
from getting hung up in the stator during the space out procedure
It is recommended for Hoists and Rigs to have below Tools and necessary
accessories for make up:
Conventional hydraulic power tong. Jaws and back-up according to the type
of rods used.
2 (two) API Sucker Rod Rod Elevators
Manual Sucker Rod Wrench for API Rods
Solvent or biodegradable degreaser / cloth / towel and Air Gun
API Torque Displacement Cards (SLB to provide them)
Approved sucker rod lubricant
Schlumberger-Private
Steps
After cleaning, dry using cloth, towels, or pressurized air. Both the pin and box must be
completely clean and dried after the process described above.
If the sucker rods are not going to be installed immediately, it is recommended to apply
storage grease to the threads and place a plastic protector on them.
Installation Pre-work
Hydraulic Tongs / API Rods
Test the tongs without any loads to ensure that the hydraulic system is working properly
and that operating temperatures have been reached.
Connect the couplings to the cleaned and lubricated sucker rod pins. These should be
connected by hand until there shoulder to shoulder contact is made.

Steps
Connection make-up
API Rods
Use the correct sized sucker rod elevators to lift the sucker rods. Ensure that the elevator
plates are not deformed or eroded. Ensure that the sucker rod elevators are in proper
working condition.
Once the sucker rod is vertical and aligned with the wellhead, lower the sucker rod until
the coupling comes in contact softly with the pin of the previously installed sucker rod.
For the initial sucker rod connection, ensure that there is shoulder to shoulder contact by
tightening the sucker rods by hand. Use the supplied sucker rod torque cards to make the
appropriate markings. Starting with a low-pressure input on the hydraulic tongs, begin to
makeup the sucker rod connection. Continue to increase the power tong hydraulic torque
until the desired displacement is achieved.
For sucker rod connections 2-5, ensure that there is shoulder to shoulder contact by
tightening the sucker rods by hand. Use the supplied sucker rod torque cards to make the
appropriate markings. Using the previously set hydraulic tong torque settings, begin to
makeup the sucker rod connection. Ensure that the connection was made up to
specifications. If not, continue to adjust the hydraulic tong torque until the desired result is
achieved.
Once 3 consecutive connections have been made without the need to adjust the hydraulic
tong torque settings, the hydraulic tongs will be deemed to be calibrated. The
displacement will now only need to be checked on every 10 sucker rod connections. If
adjustments are subsequently found to be required, return to step 1 and follow the
procedures until the hydraulic tongs are recalibrated.

Steps
To ensure the gradual application of torque, the power tong lever should only be operated
in low gear until it reaches the required pressure before opening the by-pass valve. When
applying torque to the make-up, the equipment engine should NOT be sped up as this
could generate torque values higher than normal, potentially causing damage the
connections and the dies.
When using the sucker rod tongs, avoid actions which could cause an uneven application
of power.
If using a manual sucker rod wrench to rotate the sucker rod until the coupling comes in
contact with the rod contact face. Do not apply any torque to the connection as this will
affect the final torque makeup results
For the cross overs between different diameter of the telescopic strings, the tong is set to
torque the corresponding minimum diameter, and then apply the difference corresponding
to the maximum diameter, using a manual wrench
For rods where its use applies, it represents an essential element of control to ensure the
correct make-up of the connection.
The proper sucker rod torque cards must always be used. The sucker rod diameter,
grade, and condition (new or used) all determine which sucker rod torque card will be
required.

Steps
Polished Rod Coupling
For any connection to a polished rod pin, a polished rod coupling must be used. Sucker rod
connections rely on the shoulder to shoulder contact to counteract the torsional forces. However,
polished rods do not have a shoulder for the coupling to act against. Instead, the polished rod
threads are longer and cut with a 9-degree taper. The Polished rod coupling has a matching tape
profile which will create a stronger connection and help to counteract the rotational forces. The
polished rod coupling will be identified by a PR stamped or printed onto the coupling OD, along
with the connection size.
Handling Considerations
Basic instructions
Avoid mechanical damages to any surfaces of the rod; these might cause marks and then
act as stress concentrators that might trigger premature failures.
Avoid metal-to-metal contact of the rods with other metallic elements. Use wood, rubber
or other soft material separators.
For placing at the well site, use storage beds with at least 3 supports located at equal
distance between each other, dividing the rods in 3 equal parts.
For loading and unloading, each rod must be handled by at least two operators, who will
seize the extremities of the rod, making gentle movements and avoiding hitting them or
metal-to-metal contact.
For hoisting with elevator maneuvers, the free end must be accompanied by an operator
avoiding hitting it with the equipment substructures.
When using auxiliary accessories, these must be protected by soft material as wood or
rubber.
All the indications above are intended to prevent improper practices that could cause
further damage and material failure during operation. These must be reviewed and agreed
with the Safety and Environment of each company involved in ordert o ensure peoples
and environment safety.
