Assessment 3: Part A - Argumentative Essay (20%)

Assignment Question
Write an argumentative essay going for or against ONE of the following topics:
Topic
1. Does spending too much time on social media ruin family and personal relationships?
2. Should co-curricular activities be made compulsory in universities?
3. Is fast fashion bad for the environment?
4. Should animal testing be banned?

Guidelines for the Assignment


1) Work in a group of 3-5 people.
2) Provide a suitable title for your essay.
3) Your essay should consist of 5 paragraphs (consisting of an Introduction, Body with 3
paragraphs, and a Conclusion).
4) Have 3 sub-points to support each main idea in the body of your essay.
5) The assignment should be around 500-600 words (excluding references).

Citation and Referencing


6) Provide at least 3 in-text citations from 3 different sources in APA 7th edition referencing
style (and not more than 5 sources).
7) List all documents cited on a reference list at the end of the assignment.

Typing specification
8) Format the essay double-spaced, with 1-inch (2.54cm) margins. Use Times New Roman, 12-
point.

Submission
9) On the assignment, have a cover page (use Cover Page Sample below) where you type in
your group/class number, members’ names, matric numbers, instructor’s name, submission
date, and the assignment title.
10) Submit your assignment in Week 14 on eLEAP.
11) Refer to the marking scheme to see how marks are awarded.
12) *Late submission will be penalised! THREE (3) marks per day to be deducted from raw
marks for late submission and the assignments submitted SEVEN days after the deadline
(as indicated by individual instructor) will be rejected.

Assessment 3: Part B - Annotated Bibliography (5%)

Overview
An annotated bibliography provides a brief account of the available research on a given topic.

Assignment Question
During your research process for the essay in Part A, pick 2 sources and prepare an Annotated
Bibliography which includes this information:

1) Citation
2) Introduction
3) Aims and research methods
4) Usefulness (to your research/to a particular topic)
5) Limitations
6) Reflection (explain how this work supports your topic or how it will fit in with your research)

Guidelines for the Assignment


7) Work in a group of 3-5 people (as in Part A).
8) The length of an annotated bibliography should not be more than 300 words for each source.
9) Your annotated bibliography should be one paragraph only for each source.
10) The reference and in-text citation format should follow the APA 7th Edition citation style.
11) Use complete sentences and pages must be numbered.
12) Proofread carefully for clarity, organisation, spelling, and grammar.

13) Format the annotated bibliography double-spaced, with 1-inch (2.54cm) margins. Use Times
New Roman, 12-point.

Submission
14) Submit your assignment in Week 14 on eLEAP with Part A: Argumentative Essay (same
document, on a new page after the References for Part A).
