Rationale for Lesson Design/Plan

Section 1: routine information:

• Grade :5
• Section of work: Perimeter, area, and volume of 2D shapes.
• Sub-Topic of this lesson: Perimeter of 2D shapes.

Section 2: purpose/objectives
• KEY QUESTIONS: What is the perimeter of a 2D shape?
: How do you measure length of a 2D shape?
• SKILLS: Learners will learn how to find the perimeter when given all the measures
of the sides.
• ATTITUDES AND VALUES: This lesson will teach learners to conceptualize shapes
and those shapes are not free hand drawings but have sides that can be
measured. This lesson will enhance learners’ view of the word around them, that
every object can be a shape and if a shape its perimeter can be found using
relevant formulae.

Section 3: Rationale for key pedagogical choices (methodology used)

I chose a perimeter person as my introduction the lesson, it is an exercise that help to get
learners interested in the lesson and it also assists visual learners in comprehending the
content knowledge. I will use colourful 2D shapes to explain different perimeter formula
of different shapes. To draw from their background knowledge I will instruct learners to
identify 2D shapes around the classroom(door, window and the board).
Section 4: Write a detailed sequence of lesson steps that builds a systematic and coherent
process of learning.

Describe what will happen in each lesson step

Am of the lesson
step Teacher explanations / questions / Learner participation &
examples / instructions / actions activities

1. Introduction
I will use perimeter person as an
introduction to the lesson Identify 2D shapes
from the perimeter
person

I will instruct learners to identify real life Identify 2D shapes they

2D shapes from around the classroom. see in the classroom.

2. Explain the I will explain to the learners the definition

content
of perimeter.
Perimeter is a total distance around the
shape.
It is the distance of all sides added
together.
Length s measured in km, mm, cm, m,
because perimeter is a distance it must be
measured in units.

3. Brief I will conduct a brief practical on how to Use a ruler to measure

practical
measure length using a ruler on a 2D the sides of 2D shapes
shape and instruct learners to try it on
their own.

I will give learners pamphlets of the Complete an activity

4. Class
activity exercise and instruct them to write an
activity

5. Consolidate I will discuss the answers of the class

activity with the learners, and I will
summarize what the lesson was about.

2. Which shapes have the same length in all their sides?

3. Which shapes have different lengths in all their sides?
4. Add the total distances of the sides of the following shapes
