Homework On The Real Macbeth Banquo and Duncan

Duncan became King of Scotland in 1034 but was a weak leader. His cousin Macbeth had a claim to the throne and allied with the Earl of Orkney. They defeated and killed Duncan near Elgin in 1040, making Macbeth the new King of Scotland. Macbeth was a respected leader and ruled successfully for 17 years. However, Duncan's son Malcolm gathered support and defeated Macbeth in 1057 at Lumphanan, becoming the new King. Banquo was a contemporary of Macbeth but most scholars now agree that Banquo and his son Fleance were not real historical figures.

MR HARRIS

HOMEWORK ON THE REAL MACBETH, BANQUO, AND DUNCAN.

DUNCAN- KING OF SCOTLAND 1034-40.

Duncan became king of Scotland upon the death of Malcolm in 1034. He

was a much weaker character than Malcolm and a terrible leader. He led a
disastrous campaign into Northumbria and was forced to retreat
ignominiously back to Scotland.

His cousin Macbeth, chief of northern Scots, also had a claim to the
throne through his mother. Macbeth formed an alliance with his cousin the
Earl of Orkney, and they defeated and killed Duncan near Elgin in 1040.

MACBETH- KING OF SCOTLAND 1040-57.

Macbeth bethad mac findlaich or Macbeth as he is known in English, the

mormaer of moray, claimed the throne on his own behalf and that of his
wife Grauch, and after the death of Duncan made himself king in his place.
Respected for his strong leadership qualities, Macbeth was a wise king
who ruled successfully for 17 years. He lived in a fortified castle at
Dunsinane north of Perth. His rule was secure enough for him to go on a
pilgrimage to Rome in 1050. However, the peace was no too last: Duncan’s
son Malcolm had fled to Northumbria after the defeat of his father and had
given up his claim to the throne. In 1054 with the support of Earl siward,
he led an army against Macbeth, defeating him at the battle of Dunsinane.
Macbeth remained king, restoring Malcolm’s land to him. But in 1057 at
Lumphanan in Aberdeenshire on 15th august, Macbeth was finally
defeated, and Malcolm became king.

BANQUO.

Banquo also known as Bancho Stuart of Lochaber, birthdate: circa 990,

Birthplace: Lochaber, Scotland, death: 1043(48-58) Scotland.

Fleance and his father Banquo are both fictional characters presented as
historical fact by Hector Boece, whose Scotorum Historiae (1526–27) was
a source for Raphael Holinshed's Chronicles, a history of the British Isles
popular in Shakespeare's time. In the Chronicles, Fleance—in fear of
Macbeth—flees to Wales and marries Nesta Verch Gruffydd, daughter of
Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, the last native Prince of Wales. They have a son
named Walter who makes his way back to Scotland and is appointed Royal
Steward. According to legend, he fathered the Stuart monarchs of England
and Scotland.

The Stuarts used their connection with Fleance and his marriage to the
Welsh princess to claim a genealogical link with the legendary King
Arthur. This, they hoped, would strengthen the legitimacy of their throne.
In 1722, however, Richard Hay, a Scottish historian, presented strong
evidence that not only was James not a descendant of Fleance, but also
that both Fleance and Banquo never even existed. Most modern scholars
now agree that Fleance is not a real historical figure
