● Creations that we can see rathen than
something like auditory arts, which we hear
● These art forms are extremely diverse from
the art works that hang on one’s wall to the
movies one watches at night.
● Created to stimulate individual through visual
experience
● They often provoke a feeling of some sort
General Types of Visual Arts

1. Fine art
2. Decorative arts
3. Commercial art
1. Fine Art
● a visual art form based on aesthetics,
imagination, as well as intellectual context.
● often considered to be its own higher class of
art that is all about the expression of the artist,
something which cannot be achieved by art
forms that are designed for commercial or
utility aspects.
● sole purpose is for the artist to express
themselves and share their message.
● They are telling a story, whether it is painting,
drawing, sculpting, or even poetry and
photography.
Decorative arts
● art that serves both a utilitarian and aesthetic
purpose.
● the term is synonymous with arts and crafts, a
means through which objects that serve a
physical purpose are designed in a way that
makes them visually appealing.
● typically ornate and crafted by an artisan with
a specialized set of skills.
● can come in the form of ordinary objects but
their aesthetic qualities
○ Carpentry
○ Pottery
○ glass blowing
○ Metal working
○ textiles
○ jewelry-making
Commercial art
● designed for the ultimate purpose of promoting
goods, services, and concepts to make them more
marketable.
● seen primarily in advertising where art is often
used to boost sales by stimulating interest among
consumers.
● produced and replicated on a massive scale to
increase outreach
● can take the form of a logo on a wrapper of a
favorite candy bar, an advertisement in a
magazine, or on a billboard.
● These labels and images were designed by
someone to sell a product, which defines it as
commercial art.
Three subcategories of Visual art

1. representational art
2. abstract art
3. non-objective art

Representational Art
● represents actual people or objects
● can be sculptures, paintings, and drawings.
● created from real-life sources and is a more realistic
art form as it represents nature, objects, people, and animals.
Abstract Art

● its aim or purpose is to take a

subject from reality and then present
it in such a way that it appears
differently from the way it is in
reality.
● This is done by taking shapes,
colors, and lines and transforming
them.
● occur when the artist decides that he
wants to portray the subject in a
non-traditional manner
Non-objective Art

● created entirely for aesthetic

purposes.
● The objective of this art form is to
use the principles and elements of
art in such a way that the final result
will be visually stimulating.
Common Types of Visual Arts

1. Painting
2. Drawing
3. Sculpting
4. Architecture
5. Ceramic Art
6. Photography
7. Making Films
1. Painting

● one of the oldest forms of visual art

and is also known as a form of
traditional art
● Painting is done on a surface, such
as a canvas, a rock, or a ceiling.
● Tools such as brushes, or methods to
transfer paint, such as dripping, are
done to create an image or
expression that may be realistic or
abstract.
2. Drawing
● Drawing is the simplest type of visual art.
● Drawings are usually done on paper and
involve three main types of drawing that
include realistic, expressive, and
symbolic.
● By creating lines, there is shape.
● Details will make the drawing look more
realistic or complex.
● By adding visual texture, perspective, or
color, it becomes an illustration.
3. Sculpting

● has a three-dimensional form.

● It may be made of ceramics, metal,
wood, plastic, or even ice.
● It may be realistic, such as a
representative of the shape and size
of the human body, or it may be
abstract, such as a sphere that is
symbolic of a planet.
4. Architecture
● a process that involves planning,
designing, droughting, and then
constructing a structure like a
building or bridge.
● The final design is both practical
and expressive or has aesthetic
value.
● Many architectural designs are
iconic and are symbols in many
cultures.
5. Ceramic Art

● Ceramics can be both an art and a

craft as many designs are for display
or decorative purposes, while others
are more functional.
● Ceramics can include figurines,
pottery, and things like tableware.
● Items can be made from stoneware,
earthenware, porcelain, or bone
china.
6. Photography

● Photography is made with a camera.

● A manual camera requires film.
● Digital photography can be easily
edited or manipulated with apps.
● Photography projects images of
people, objects, scenes, or
landscapes.
● Photography can capture images
from places that most people may
never see, such as a war zone.
7. Making Films
● most advanced form of art so far created
by man. It is modern art because it uses
modern technologies and through it, we
make art through the things that we
capture and nature or background we
use.
● Movies are the highest art form because
it takes writing, story, photography,
drawing, painting, concept art,
animation, visual effects, music, acting,
and a whole host of other talents, skills,
and abilities from talented individuals.
