If you’re anything like me you probably check out
these road signs to see what it says. I like to explore new
places and learn more about old places.
There’s a rest area between Jordan and Winnett
that was built a few years ago. It’s even better than the
one between Glasgow and Hinsdale. (Winnett residents
call it the Taj-mah-sh...). Anyway, there are two signs
telling what historic place or places that were in that
area.
One sign is Fort Musselshell, located in Garfield
County near Mosby. The fort was located on the
Missouri River 35 miles north of Mosby. It was a trading
post in the 1960s and 1870s. The only whites in that part
of the state were woodchoppers for the Missouri River
steamboats, wolfers, trappers and Indian trappers.
The Crows and Gros Ventre Indians traded at the
fort. A buffalo robe brought them 3 cups of coffee, or 6
cups of sugar, or 10 cups of flour.
It was a tolerably profitable business from the traders
