Learning Task 4.8 Fits Perfect!
This activity will help you analyze the percentage composition of different brands of food
products and decide on the food products’ appropriate percentage composition.

Objective:
1. Analyze the composition of two brands of food product.
2. Determine the composition of a food product on a percent by mass basis.
3. Analyze and compare which food product has more protein, fats, carbohydrates, and
vitamins.

Part I. Pre- Activity Task


1. Choose one food category:
a. Candy
b. Canned goods
c. Drinks (juice, energy drink, coffee, etc.)
d. Instant food/meal
e. Food seasoning

2. Collect food labels from the two different brands from your chosen category (#1).
3. Check for the presence of the following substances:
a. Salt
b. Carbohydrates (sugar)
c. Fats and/or oil
d. Vitamins

1. Analyze the nutrition facts labels of a certain food product. Refer to the figure below as
your guide.

Substance Daily Recommended Intake

Salt Adults should eat no more than 6g of salt a day (2.4g sodium) – that's around 1
teaspoon. Children aged: 1 to 3 years should eat no more than 2g salt a day (0.8g
salt sodium) 4 to 6 years should eat no more than 3g salt a day (1.2g sodium).

Sugar The maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day are ( 7 ): Men: 150
calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons) Women: 100 calories per day (25
sugar grams or 6 teaspoons).

Fats and The dietary reference intake (DRI) for fat in adults is 20% to 35% of total calories from
oils fat. That is about 44 grams to 77 grams of fat per day if you eat 2,000 calories a day.
It is recommended to eat more of some types of fats because they provide health
benefits.

3. How often do you eat (consume) this kind of product?
4. How will you describe the type of diet your family have based on your data?
5. What changes you would need to apply to improve your family’s health? Discuss your
plan in full detail. Support your answer by providing a sample computation of
substances (% composition).
