visit will enable her to perform a nursing procedure with ease and deftness, to save time and effort, with the end view of rendering effective nursing care to clients. DEFINITION
The Community health bag is designed to
carry equipment and material needed during a visit to the home, school or factory. Equipment and material are needed to make tests and to demonstrate patient care such as eye irrigation, application of ointments ,medications. (TNAI) The overall objective of using community health bag in a systematic method is “to be able to carry out nursing procedures in the family with improvised equipments articles available at home, maintaining scientific and nursing principles which can also be practiced by the family in her absence”. To prevent carrying of infection from one patient to another and from one place to another by keeping bag and its contents as clean as possible. To demonstrate the principles of cleanliness to patients and family members by using the bag in orderly way. To carry out selected procedure, demonstrations, teaching and follow up services for patients and family members 1. The use of the bag technique should minimize if not totally prevent the spread of infection from individuals to families, hence, to the community. 2. Bag technique should save time and effort on the part of the nurse in the performance of nursing procedures.
3. Bag technique should not overshadow
concern for the patient rather should show the effectiveness of total care given to an individual or family. The hand must be washed with soap and water each time before touching the bag. The nurse must avoid touching dirty or contaminated things after or in between time of washing. The bag should be kept in clean and without danger of being contaminated and the children or pet animals. Avoid unnecessary exposure while done procedure. Secure the bag by often cleaning and should be covered properly when it is not in use. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS IN THE USE OF THE BAG 1. The bag should contain all necessary articles, supplies and equipment which may be used to answer emergency needs.
2.The bag and it’s contents should be cleaned as
often as possible, supplies replaced and ready for use at anytime. 3.The bag and it’s contents should be well protected from contact with any article in the home of the patients. Consider the bag and it’s contents clean and/or sterile while any article belonging to the patients as dirty and contaminated The public health bag is used by public health nurse to- Provide antenatal, intranatal and postnatal care to mother and child.
Perform certain diagnostic procedures
such as Hb testing, urine testing for early detection of high risk cases and provide timely treatment. situation calls for, helps in minimizing or avoiding contamination of the bag and its contents.
6.The bag when used for a communicable case
should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before keeping and re-using. Equip the bag with the following article
1.Front pocket: Nail brush, nail cutter, towel,
soap case and soap 2.Right side pocket: Newspaper or plastic sheet, inch tap,fetoscope 3. Left side pocket: Stationeries, family folder, waste paper bag. 4.Uper compartment: (sterile chamber) Artery forceps, thumb forceps, small bowel and scissors, medication box, clinical and rectal thermometer, sterile dressings in a bowel, a pair of disposable gloves, antiseptic container,savlon,betadine,benedict’s solution, acetic acid, ethylated spirit and eye drop or eye ointments, tallquist paper (for checking hemoglobin),
5. Lower compartment: Urine analysis kit should
contain the following such as specimen bottle, kidney tray, test tube, test tube holder, match box, spirit lamp, and brush etc. Outer pocket: is used for keeping a dairy to maintain records, clean paper bags and a square piece of newspaper or plastic sheet to keep the bag on. The other one is used for keeping things for hand washing These are used for keeping solutions and medicines for internal and external use, simple instruments for dressing, articles for certain procedures such as temperature taking, urine testing, antenatal examination and few additional things for health teaching PROCEDURE: Steps Rationale
1. Select a work area To prevent

Write on what was observed what was done, instruction given, plan for next visit. PROCEDURE: 1. Open the bag, take the linen or plastic lining and spread over work field. The paper lining clean side out (folded part out).
2.Place the bag on the table or any flat surface
lined with paper lining, clean side out (folded part touching the table). Put bag’s handles or straps beneath the bag.
3. Take out hand towel, soap dish, and apron and
place them at one corner of the work area (within the confines of the plastic lining).
4. Place waste bag outside of work area.
5. Ask for a basin of water if faucet is not available. Place these outside the work area.
6. Do hand washing. Wipe, dry with towel. Leave
the plastic wrappers of the towel in soap dish in the bag.
7. Put on right side out and wrong side with crease
touching the body, sliding the head into the neck strap, neatly tie the straps at the back.
8. Put out the things most needed for the specific
case ( ex. Thermometer, kidney basin, cotton ball, waste paper) and place at one corner of the work area. 9. Proceed to the specific nursing care or treatment.
10. After completing nursing care or treatment,
clean and alcoholize the things used. Record all relevant findings about the client and members of the family. Take note of environmental factors which affect the clients/family health. Include quality of nurse- patient relationship. Assess effectiveness of nursing care provided. In order to keep your bag ready for use at any time,observe some of the following instructions. Clean the bag daily,protect from excessive heat or rain to reserve it in a good condition. Replace the drugs,dressing and linen daily in the bag. Empty all the contents,wash the bag with soap and water once in a week or more frequently depending on how much it has been used and dry it the sun. Wash the non-expendable articles such as instruments,linen and utensils with soap and water and boil them. Repalce cotton or plastic bags containing swabs and dressing with sterile one. Check gloves,catheters,thermometer and glass articles,replace if spoilt or broken. Repack the bag in an orderly way;keep articles in their usual places to make them easily traceble.
