PREFACE

First of all, we want to express our thanks to Allah SWT, because of His bless and grace, the
paperentitled ” Integrated Teaching Activities: Story Retelling ( Past Experience)” can be
finished on time.

This paper is a requirement to fulfill the assignment from Mrs. Wawat

Srinawati,S.Pd.,M.Pd. the English Teaching For Young Learners course lecturer of STKIP
Muhammadiyah Bogor. we also thanks to her for all the guidance to complete it.

In completing this paper, we faced many problems, but with the help of many people, all the
problems could be passed. May Allah SWT give the blessing for all parties. Although this
paper has many deficiencies in the arrangement and explanation, we hope that it can be used
as a reference for the reader to understand the theories of childhood by taking a look on exper
ts statements.

Chapter I

Introduction

A. Background of The Paper

Teaching integration is defined as the organization of teaching materials to link or unite s
ubjects that are often taught in separate academics. This means bridging the relationship
between academic knowledge and practice. The integrated curriculum allows students to
have a deeper understanding of the subject matter and how to apply the material they hav
e learned in the classroom in real-world situations. This ultimately helps prepare them for
their future studies, careers and life in general.
Designing fun learning strategies is a mandatory task for teachers. What is meant by a lea
rning strategy is a plan carried out by the teacher to students to achieve the objectives of
effective teaching and learning activities. In this case the teacher must be able to manage
a teaching and learning activity in order to be able to create good learning interactions wi
th students. Learning English can be done in various ways, one of which is by learning St
ory Re-Telling in English. Story retelling is an act / activity of sharing so that story retelli
ng and listeners have an equally important role. Story Retelling provides ample space or
opportunity for students to develop speaking skills in class and play a role in reconstructi
ng a story, event or information they have heard in the students' own language which is a
rranged individually, in pairs or in groups. Speaking skill is an oral language skill that is
functional in everyday human life. How not because by speaking we can obtain and conv
ey information. In this discussion, it is hoped that students can integrate the Story retellin
g learning method with practice so that it can be applied in everyday life.

Discussion

A. Improve Students' Speaking Ability through Story Retelling (Past Experience)

Story retelling is retell a story. Story Retelling provides a wide space or opportunity
for students to develop speaking skills in class and play a role in reconstructing a
story, event or information they have heard or experienced in the students' own
language which is arranged either individually, in pairs or in groups. Story retelling
activities are not only fun to do at home. Teachers also apply story retelling learning
methods in schools, especially to train students to speak.
Speaking is one of the skills that must be mastered by students in language learning.
This speaking skill has an important position because it is a reflection of students'
communicative abilities. And the ability to speak not only plays a big role in language
learning, but also plays an important role in other learning. Speaking skills are
basically the ability to express ideas, ideas, or thoughts to others through spoken
language. Although it seems trivial, speaking, which is a skill, will not develop if it is
not honed continuously. It can be concluded that students' speaking skills will not
develop well without being trained.

a. Why is story retelling good for practicing students' speaking skills?

Teaching students by telling stories is very good to be applied in learning English
with the aim of improving students' speaking skills for the following reasons:
 With Story Retelling Teachers can provide psychological and linguistic
experiences to students according to their interests, developmental level, and
needs.
 Story Retelling activities can develop the potential of students' language
skills through listening and then telling/telling it again with the aim of
training students' skills in conversing to convey ideas in oral form.
 Story Retelling activities are fun and not boring activities.
 Story Retelling activities provide knowledge and experience which is a
model of experience in the real world.
 The benefits of learning with the story retelling method
 Story Retelling activities are not only recommended to be done at home by
parents to their children. In the world of education, Story Retelling is also
highly recommended because of its many benefits.
This storytelling activity besides helping children to improve and develop
their speaking skills, there are many other benefits.

b. The Benefits of Story Retelling activities:

 Develop Students' Speaking Skills
Through stories, students can have a rich vocabulary. In addition, they can
also learn how to use certain expressions and also how to compose good
sentences. These things are very important for students to be able to convey
their ideas or opinions well and easily understood by the interlocutor.
Another thing is that when stories are read, the teacher can arouse students'
curiosity and encourage them to dare to ask questions and express their
opinions.
 Build Closeness and Harmony
When the teacher teaches by telling stories, it will make the learning
atmosphere more fun. Students feel safe and comfortable while learning so
that automatically close and harmony between teachers and students can be
built. The harmony of the relationship between teachers and students is very
influential on the success of learning and the achievement of learning
objectives.
 Intelligence Enhancement
Story retelling can be useful for increasing children's intelligence, because
when doing story retelling students will try to understand the story that will
be conveyed, so that it will indirectly sharpen the brain to think.
 Creativity Enhancement
When story retelling, you definitely need ideas and concepts so that the
stories conveyed can be conveyed properly. From those ideas and concepts,
one's creativity will increase, thus creating various ways so that listeners
don't feel bored.

B. Learning Tips with Story Retelling Method in Class

There are three stages in storytelling, namely:

1. In the opening activity, the teacher will draw the students' focus with a
concentration game, so as to create a two-way contact between the teacher and
students.

2. The second is the core activity, namely storytelling activities. The teacher brings
the story by paying attention to words, body gestures, and sound play so that it
displays a visual image in the minds of students as the audience.

3. Closing activity, the teacher provides opportunities for students to express their
opinions, express messages orally about the stories they have heard. Then provide
opportunities for students to describe the contents of the story visually in the form
of pictures. Students are also given the opportunity to describe the message in the
story in writing under the picture. This activity is an operational form of providing
a meaningful experience after listening to stories. The next teacher activity is to
provide feedback and reinforcement of the results of oral, visual and written
assignments from students.

During story retelling, there are several factors that support the story retelling
process so that it becomes interesting for students to listen to, including:

1) Eye contact, the teacher looks at the students. Students will feel cared for and
invited to interact. Students are interested and listen to stories.

2) Facial expressions, can support the life or not of the story.

3) Gestures, can support describing a more interesting story.

4) Maintain interaction with students. So that students are more involved and the
stories that Smart Teachers tell are more memorable, invite students to interact
during the activity. Smart teachers can invite students to discuss or provide
prompting questions.

5) Invite students to take turns telling stories. Smart teachers do not always have to be
the main character who is the center of attention of students. Occasionally involve
students in storytelling. Smart teachers can ask students to tell stories voluntarily or
by scheduling each student to take turns telling stories. Thus, every student has the
same opportunity to show his skills in storytelling.

C. Examples of Story Re-telling (especially about funny experiences and the last
Holiday)

Example 1 : Funny Experience

I had a funny experience last Sunday. It happened when I went to the mall with my
brother brother. That day, my brother and I went to the mall near our house. I want to
buy a T-shirt. We left the house after lunch. It was very crowded in the mall because it
was a Sunday. Lots of teenagers hanging out there. We entered a fashion store. I went to
the T-shirt counter and chose the one I was interested in. Suddenly, my brother saw one
of his friends and he said he wanted to talk to him. I let my brother go and asked him not
to go too far. After paying for the clothes, I looked for my sister. I'm a little angry
because I can't find it easily. I came out of the shop and looked everywhere for it.
Finally, I saw the back of a boy in a t-shirt like the one my sister was wearing. I came to
the boy and pulled the shirt from behind. But the boy screamed. And when he turned
around, I was so ashamed that he wasn't my brother.

Example 2 : Funny Experience

Some time ago, me and the two just watched them intan and sri maryani talking about
very serious things.

"I have found a tool to make humans able to talk to other humans in faraway places.
And I named the tool TELEPHONE," said Sri Maryani. Made me and diamond amazed.

Not long after, the diamond responded to what Sri Maryani said "I also found a tool to
make humans fly like birds. And I named that tool AIRCRAFT." he said.

Not wanting to lose I said. "I've also found a tool to make humans walk through walls,
glass and metal, and I named that tool “ DOOR." Hehehe
Example 1 : Last Holiday Experience

Last week, my friends and I went on vacation to Belitung Island for three days. Belitung
Island is often referred to as the Earth of the Rainbow Troops. I have many experiences
during my vacation. On the first day, we were Hopping Island, we visited Tanjung
Klayang Island, Batu Sailing Island, Sand Island, Galangal Island and others. and after
that the afternoon activities were closed with snorkeling and enjoying the beautiful
sunset. On the second day, we visited the school where Laskar Pelangi was filmed and
in the afternoon we spent the day at Tanjung Tinggi beach. the third day, we were
invited for a city tour and did not forget to buy souvenirs typical of Belitung. In the
afternoon we checked out from the hotel and immediately flew to Jakarta, we really
enjoyed every corner of this island. and a lot of beautiful memories that I got from the
island of Belitung.

Example 2 : Last Holiday Experience

My last holiday was a five-day trip to Prague in the Czech Republic. I know Prague well
because I lived there when I was at university, more than ten years ago.

Instead of staying in a hotel, I stayed with one of my old friends. It was so much fun,
and a little bit like my old life. I wanted to do all the same things I did in my university
days, so I visited the university. It has changed a lot and looks more modern. I also went
to the supermarket near my old house. I loved seeing all the different foods. I was really
happy to find my favourite cheese and chocolate biscuits but they were a bit more
expensive than I remember!

We did some touristy things too. We walked up beautiful Petrin Hill and around the
castle. The views of the city are amazing up there. We walked across the historic
Charles Bridge. My friend's flat is very near the TV Tower so we saw the famous baby
statues climbing up it. Those things haven't changed, of course.
Conclusions

 Factors that support an interesting story retelling process include: Eye contact, Facial
expressions, Gestures, Maintain interaction with students and Invite students to take tu
rns telling stories.
