TOPIC I: MEDIA AND INFORMATION

LANGUAGES: CODES AND
CONVENTION
Language is an important component
in the creation of messages because
it has to be encoded and decoded in a
way to achieve the desired output.
Languages refers to a system used by
information providers or media
professionals to convey an idea or
information through the use of codes,
conventions and other technical and
symbolic ingredients. On the other
hand, media languages are words,
phrases or written or verbal language
as well as images or visual language
used for a particular medium
(UNESCO, 2020).
Codes
 are systems of sign that when
put together create meaning.

*SEMIOTICS – study of signs

Media Codes:
 Written Code
 Symbolic Code
 Technical Code

Symbolic Codes:
 They are objects with
message or meanings
accepted in one or more
societies. For instance, a black
dress which people wear
during wake conveys sadness
or grief, which also observed
in films. When you see a
character wearing something
black while he cries, you can
conclude that someone might
have died in the story (Knite).

Symbolic Codes:
 show what is beneath the
surface of what we see
(objects, setting, body
language, clothing, color, etc.)
or iconic symbols that are
easily understood.

Written Codes:
 use of language style and
textual layout (headlines,
captions, speech bubbles,
language style, etc.)

Technical Codes:
 are ways In which equipment
is used to tell the story
 this include sound, camera
angles, types of shots and
lighting as well as camera
techniques, framing, depth of
field, lighting, exposure and
juxtaposition.
