Section A Reading
Q.1 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
On the island of Crete near ancient Greece lived a king named Minos. King Minos had a terrible monster that
was half bull and half man called the Minotaur. He decided to build a prison to keep the beast. When he was
looking for a builder, he was told that there was only one man who could build for him the way he wanted it.
He was Daedalus, the most skilful builder and inventor those days in Greece. The palaces and gardens built
by him throughout the land were greatly admired for their beauty and craftsmanship.
When the king invited Daedalus, he sailed to Crete with his son Iracus. There on the island Daedalus built the
famous Labyrinth, a maze of winding passages so entangled and twisted that whoever went in could never
find the way out. And there they put the Minotaur.
Once the Labyrinth was finished Daedalus wanted to go back to Greece with his son, but the selfish king
Minos had made up his mind to keep the builder and his son in Crete. He wanted the two craftsmen to stay in
his kingdom and invent more wonderful devices for him. So, he locked Daedalus and his son in a high tower
by the sea. The king who knew that Daedalus was clever enough to find a way to escape from the tower also
ordered that any vessel that set sail from Crete be searched for stowaways before sailing.
