Reading
Read the text and choose the best answer, A, B, C or D.

Homeopathy: a form of alternative medicine

Homeopathy is an alternative system of medicine that can be traced back to the ancient
Greek physician Hippocrates (c. 476 – c. 370 BC), but it wasn’t until the 19 th century that the
German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) popularised homeopathy as an alternative to
conventional medicine of the time. Hahnemann did not agree with some of the common yet severe
treatments such as bloodletting or the use of mercury and sought to practise a more natural form of
medicine.
Hahnemann believed that life depends on a vital force that runs through the body and that if
this force is disturbed, health problems develop. He maintained that a substance that causes the
symptoms of a disease could be used in small amounts to restore this vital energy balance and
thus cure the disease. This is the principle of ‘like treats like’. For example, the first time a healthy
person drinks coffee their heart may start beating fast, they may feel more anxious or experience
insomnia. While coffee produces these symptoms in healthy individuals, it can relieve similar
symptoms in the unwell. Therefore, homeopathic treatment involves triggering the body’s natural
system of healing with substances that actually cause the disease mixed with high levels of water.
The more diluted the substance, the more effective it is in treating the illness. This concept is also
sometimes used in conventional medicine treatments such as hay fever where a small dose of the
substance that causes the allergy is given to the patient in ultra-high dilutions.
Homeopathy is a holistic medicine in which every remedy is specifically designed to suit the
patient and their symptoms. There is no such thing as a standard homeopathic remedy equivalent
to an aspirin in conventional medicine. The remedy matches the particular problem based on
where it occurs, what brings it on, and the specific types of symptoms. Through a process of
experiments homeopaths have developed a system called ‘proving’ to determine which substance
should be used to treat a particular medical condition. Healthy volunteers took potions of various
plant extracts in various dilutions for several weeks and logged any physical or emotional
symptoms they felt. The potions that allegedly caused the same symptoms in the healthy
volunteers were then used as remedies on real patients. Prescribing the right homeopathic
medicine takes a little more patience and time than conventional medicine. A doctor must listen
carefully to a patient’s specific history and complaints before choosing a treatment.
Homeopathy is the second most widely used system of medicine in the world and is
growing in popularity. Over the past decade it has grown by as much as 50 percent a year in the
USA. However, critics point out that there is no scientific evidence to prove its effectiveness and
maintain that well-conducted scientific studies don’t show that homeopathy works. Furthermore,
homeopathy simply cannot treat a number of medical problems including genetic illnesses,
diabetes, and serious infection, and critics fear that homeopathy may discourage a patient from
seeking necessary medical treatment.
