LESSON PLAN for CLASSROOM OBSERVATION in
SCIENCE 5
FIRST QUARTER
I. Objective
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates an understanding of the properties of materials
to determine whether they are useful or harmful.
B. Performance Standards The learner should be able to use local, recyclable solid or liquid
materials in making useful products.
C. Learning Competencies) The learner is expected to:
a. describe the different properties of materials;
b. distinguish the properties of material being described and
c. appreciate the importance of properties of materials that are useful
D. Most Essential learning Use the properties of materials whether they are useful or harmful.

B. Review Ask the learners why everything around us is matter.
Ask the learners why air is a matter.
C. Establishing purpose for ENGAGE
the Lesson *Use of ICT
The teacher will let the learners play 4 Pics 1 Word. The teacher will
show 4 pictures and then the learners will guess what word is being
visually described.
1. wood 6. garter
2. rubber 7. Steel hammer
3. glass 8. Chewing gum
4. soft rock 9. knife
5. metal 10. Bamboo basket
C. Presentation of the EXPLORE
lesson The teacher will emphasize that these materials are matter. All these
materials possess distinct characteristics or properties that make them
different from one another.
D. Development of the EXPLAIN
Lesson The teacher will explain the following:
( Teacher may involve the learners by reading and giving some ideas and
examples during discussion)
PROPERTIES OF MATTER
A physical property is a characteristic of matter that may be observed
and measured without changing the chemical identity:
The eight (8) PHYSICAL PROPERTIES of matter are:
1. HARDNESS- a material has this property when it does not bend
easily while resisting pressure and force. Materials having this property
such as metals, wood and rocks are commonly used to construct
buildings and bridges.
2. BRITTLENESS- a material has this property when it gets broken,
cracked or damaged because of high pressure. Some examples of objects
under this property are glass and porcelains.
3. FLEXIBILITY- a material has this property when it is capable of
bending or being bent. Materials having this property such as plastic
strings, thin metal wires, ropes are used to bind or tie things.
4. ELASTICITY- when a solid material has the ability to return to its
original shape after being stretched, it is considered to be elastic. Rubber
band which is a polymer is a perfect example of this property.
5. CONDUCTIVITY- another property of matter that makes material
conduct electricity and heat. Metals are the best example of this property.
6. MALLEABILITY- a material has this property when it has the ability
to be hammered into flat sheets just like gold, silver, iron and aluminum.
Malleable materials can be turned into different shapes and other desired
designs.
7. DUCTILITY- it is the ability of the material to be drawn into thin
wires. Metals that exhibit this property are used in electrical wirings.
8. POROSITY- cloth and sponge are examples of porous materials
because they have the ability to absorb liquids.
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER
1. COMBUSTIBILITY- it is the ability of the material to burn.
Examples of combustible materials are alcohol, wood, dried leaves,
kerosene, oil, sawdust, paper, wax and gasoline.
2. FLAMMABILITY- it is the ability to ignite or catch fire and burn
easily. Alcohol and gasoline are flammable because they turn easily.
3. BIODEGRADABILITY- it is the ability to material to decompose or
decay. Examples of biodegradable materials are fruit, vegetable peeling,
plant clippings, dead plants and animals.
HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS QUESTION:
Why do we need to determine the physical and chemical properties
of a material?
E. Enrichment Activity EXTEND
NAME IT TO WIN IT!
The learners will guess the words from the given descriptions and
pictures to determine the physical or chemical properties being visually
described.
1. Hardness
2. Porosity
3. Conductivity
4. Flammability
5. Combustibility
F. Generalization
What are the eight physical properties of matter?
What are the three chemical properties of matter?
Is it necessary to determine the physical and chemical properties of a
material?
Why?
G. Evaluation Identify the physical and or chemical property (ies) of the given
materials. Write your answer in the box.
1. wood
Physical Chemical
2. hammer (metal)
Physical Chemical
3. rubber band
Physical Chemical
4. plastic bottle
Physical Chemical
5. cloth Physical Chemical
V. VALUES INTEGRATION Remember:
Properties are defined as the characteristics that make matter distinct
from one another. Like us humans, we have different characteristics-
colors, height, weight, personality and the like. ALL WE NEED IS TO
RESPECT OUR DISTRICT CHARACTERISTICS AND
DIFFERENCES.
VI. Reflection Why is it important for us to know the properties of matter?
