Interview
with NIRMAL SINGH

1.Why did you wanted to join Indian Army ?

 There are several ways to serve the Motherland.
Administrative jobs also serve the nations. But securing
and serving it on the cost of life is an elite job and is
incomparable. One faces several hurdles while serving on
border, marked on some of the toughest terrains of the
world but motivation, leadership and going beyond limits
to serve the motherland means everything to me.
2. What is it like living away from family while in the
military ?
 It is very hard .we carried their photos, couldn't wait to get
their letters, and missed them like hell especially around
holiday and birthdays .'But being away from loved ones
was not just hard for the soldier, it was difficult for the
families. It makes it easier for me when I think about
serving the motherland.

3. What are your weaknesses?

 My weakness is my family sometimes i miss then so much
that I even gets so much demotivated and feels like giving
up and just go back to them.

4. As a father do you want your children also to join

army?
 As a solider I do want , but its up to them what they wants
to do without joining the military also they can serve the
nation in many ways. It was my choice to become a soldier

.so ,its their choice what they want to become .

5.What diet do you follow to build your strength and

agility?
 We get fruits and milk in the morning, dal rice in the lunch
. Then sometime we get buttermilk in the afternoon and
sometimes tea. Tea is my most favorite part as it freshen
up all my mood .In dinner we get chicken sometimes
vegetable and chapati.
6.What all advantages do you enjoy being a soldier?
 I get a guaranteed paycheck and cash bonuses, education
benefits ,30 days of annual paid vacation ,travelling, we
have option for full time or part time services , health and
dental check regularly.

7.What is your greatest strength as a soldier?

 Joining the military developed so many strengths in
me like leadership , teamwork , integrity, bravery.

8.What are your most pressing problems as a soldier ?

 First of all , separation from the families in an increasingly
unsafe and polarised countryside. lack of modernization ,
capital outlay living the lowest in the last ten years. most
budget getting diverted to election winning formulations.
Movement of soldiers on duty or leave at short notices ,

without adequate rail reservation.

9. When you started your journey did you feel like giving
up?
 Yes, I fell giving up sometimes and I still feel that I should
give up. But then, the picture of the motherland comes in
my mind and I tell myself, that you are stronger than
anybody else just don't give up . I remember my only goal
of my life is to serve the nation.
10. As a soldier do you want to convey any message to
the people of our nation ?
 Yes, I want to say that this nation has given everybody an
identity . we must respect our motherland .we should live
with peace and feelings of brotherhood . by doing small
things you can do something for their nation .

Summary Reports
Soldiers are one of the
greatest assets of any
country. I was keen to know
about a soldier's life , when
we read the chapter “The Enemy’’ in term 1 as a soldier's
job is one of the toughest things to do. Even though they
know they will have to face numerous problems, they still
do so for their country. They are the guardians of the
nation and protects its citizens at all costs. Moreover, they
are a very selfless lot who put the interest of the country
above their personal interest. Their lives are very tough.
Nonetheless, they always fulfill their duties despite the
hardships. A country sleeps peacefully as the soldiers
performs its duties. Sometimes they do not even get an
adequate amount of supply to lead a normal life. Many
time soldiers need to go on long missions to remote areas.
Being out off from the main cities and towns. These areas
lack even the basic facilities. It is difficult to live in such
places. Lack of proper supply of food in these areas
makes the life of the soldiers even more difficult. They
still continue to fulfill their duties amid all these
difficulties.
undergo rigorous training to become fit to fight, how do
they manage to live in harshest of weather conditions and
many more things.
If I have to describe the life of
soldiers in a single word, I
would describe it as “patriotic”.
Though some of you would like
to describe it as “tough” and some of you even as “risky”.
In true sense a soldier’s life is a collection of all the three.
A soldier’s life is patriotic because he overwhelmed with
the thought of protecting the motherland at all costs.
Tough, as they have to stay away from family and friends.
Risky, as they secure are borders and are under constant
threat from terror attacks.

I have learned many evergreen lessons while doing this

project. First and foremost comes discipline. Discipline is
one of the biggest virtues one can imbibe from the army.
To have high standards of professionalism as soldiers are
known for their diligence and dedication towards their
duty and importance of showing confidence and bravery
when it is required. The Willingness to sacrifice as our
soldiers do not think twice before laying down their lives
in service of the country. You don’t have to go that far in
your daily life but making few necessary sacrifices at
home and at work can be a great asset that will take your
places. Another thing I’ve learned is how to be
determined and dedicated to achieve your goals. Don’t be
the person who gives up at the slightest hint of
discomfort. Instead, look up to the soldiers and their never
giving up attitude and take lessons from them. Be
determined in whatever you pursue and don’t give up
until you achieve it.
The honour of the country and that of the national flag is
of supreme importance for an ideal soldier. They can go
to any extent to protect it. They don’t hesitate laying their
lives to protect the country’s honour. They fulfill their
responsibility with a smile on their faces. They have
unflinching devotion to their duties. They indeed worthy
of all respect and honour and fine examples of inculcating
patriotic feeling in others. We salute such noble souls and
look up to them for inspiration.

______________________________________________
From this Interview and the chapter
“The Enemy’’ by Pearl S.Buck ,I
have come to know a lot about soldier
and the lifestyle of a soldier.
Discipline and obedience are key
values for a soldier. A soldier is
expected and trained to be a multi-
tasker ,and often an expert in multiple
fields. The life of a soldier has some
peculiarities, A deep sense of
discipline , a habit to follow a schedule , living away from
family and friends ,lot of cooperation among peers ,
always ready for the ultimate sacrifice , hard
training .they has to deal with hunger , bad weather , poor
clothing, and even boredom between battles.
Our soldier aren’t just fighting the enemies. They’re also
fighting natural disasters. At such high altitudes, frost
bites , chilblains, loss of memory and pulmonary edemas
are common problems . those who are physically ,
mentally , emotionally and spiritually tough, manage to
survive all odds. And these are the ones who become a
part of the army . A Soldier is not a person who is just in
uniform. A true Soldier forms specific character traits
over the years which are Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless
Service, Honor, Integrity, and Courage to fight for the
country whenever required.
The main moto of a soldier is to ensure national security
and defend their nation from external/internal attacks or
aggressions.
I have learned the following things first “Discipline”
their life consists of daily
discipline, right from the time they
wake up and make their beds to the
punctual timing of their sleep and
everything in between. Discipline
is one of the biggest virtues one can
imbibe from the Indian Army.
Second “Selflessness” life is for two things – living and
giving. Our solider give up their families and civilian life
in an instant when duty calls. This quality of selflessness
and putting others first is something we can all learn from
and emulate.

Third “Willingness to sacrifice” our soldiers do not think

twice before laying down their
lives in service of the country. No
wonder they command so much
love and respect for their
willingness to give the ultimate
sacrifice for the nation. You don’t
have to go that far in your daily
life but making a few necessary
sacrifices at home and at work can be a great asset that
will take you places

Fourth “Proper planning and strategy” no Army mission

is conducted without proper planning and strategy in
place. The reasons for this are obvious – no one wants to
walk into a death trap. Similarly, we focus only on our
daily needs and fail to strategise and plan properly for the
future. This can be akin to a death trap, especially from a
financial standpoint. Unless you invest in the right
instruments and take adequate insurance in the form of
term plans and other policies, you could be putting your
and your loved ones lives in peril. Learn to plan properly
and execute plans like the Indian Army does.

Fifth “Determination” don’t be the person who gives up at

the slightest hint of discomfort. Instead, look up to the
Indian Army and their never-give-up attitude and take
lessons from them. Be determined in
whatever you pursue and don’t give up
until the mission is accomplished. Fight
your discomforts the same way our
Army fights its enemies and you will
emerge victorious in the end.

We get the privilege to live in a peaceful environment and

concentrate on our personal lives only because the
soldiers are guarding our country round the clock. They
ensure a peaceful environment in the country at all times.
They are disciplined and act responsibly.
An ideal soldier must be for the country. They are
expected to serve their country with selfless self and
sacrifice their lives for their respect. We salute such great
souls and look towards them for inspiration.

Working in the army is about love . it’s a passion .you do

it for the pride and honour of you country .

______________________________________________

A Soldier is considered to be the

hero of the masses. A soldier puts
his or her like in danger in order to
protect the country from any
impending dangers of life of
soldiers is filled with sacrifices and
stories of bravery and courage .From fighting enemies in
the front lines at our border to rescuing citizens of the
country from earthquakes , floods or conflict zones , a
soldiers's importance in our lives are plenty And it is not
an easy job. In the line of conflict that we can sleep
peacefully at our homes. You need a lot of dedication and
will power to go through and clear the training process
which will be hard and rigorous in nature .
One important role of the Soldier is carrying out orders
and following commands given by
officers. As a result, discipline and
obedience are key values for
Soldiers. In order for an Army to
function effectively, it is essential
that all Soldiers are on the same
page and can work together as a
team .Another important
responsibility of Soldiers is protecting their country and
its people. This often means putting themselves in danger
in order to defend against enemies or harmful
threats .Soldiers also play an important role in
humanitarian efforts. They may provide aid during natural
disasters or help with reconstruction efforts after a war
has ended .Lastly, many people wonder what it is like to
be a Soldier. This can be a difficult question to answer
because everyone's experience is different. However, it is
possible to get an idea by discussing some of the duties
and responsibilities that Soldiers have as well as the
challenges they face while serving their country.
Being a soldier is not easy, in fact, it is one of the most
challenging things to do. Their lives are full of hardships
and challenges which no ordinary person can survive.
Firstly, they spend a great deal of time away from their
loved ones. It disturbs them
emotionally and they do not even get
any holidays. Even in festivals, they are busy
safeguarding the nation.

Similarly, soldiers have to undergo rigorous training to

become fit to fight battles. It becomes exhausting and
physically challenging, but they still go on. To make it
worse, they do not even get an adequate amount of supply
to lead a normal life. Sometimes, the food rationing is
low, the other times they get posted in remote areas
without any signal.

Subsequently, they also have to make do in the harshest

of weather conditions. It does not matter if it is scorching
hot or chilling cold, they have to be out on the battlefield.
Similarly, they do not even get enough bulletproof
equipment which will keep them safe. Thus, we see what
a challenging life our soldiers lead to protect their
country.

A soldier protects the country from terrorist enemy

countries and bad elements in the society .
