1. What qualities (positive) best describe you as a person?

a. kind
b. caring
c. determined
d. patient
e. flexible
2. What qualities (negative) best describe you as a person?
a. easy going
b. perfectionist
c. over thinker
d. emotional
e. judgemental
3. What qualities best describe you as a teacher?
a. friendly
b. perfectionist
c. creative
d. patient
e. organized
4. From the above, which qualities form part of your strengths? Weaknesses?
STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
a Creative Perfectionist
b Organized Emotional
c Patient Over thinker
d Approachable Kind

Your qualities underlie the values that you hold dear.

1. What do these values mean to you and your day-to-day life?
These values define who I am. They uphold my ways of dealing with my day-
to-day routine especially in establishing relationships with my students and
co-teachers.

2. How do you demonstrate these values with your actions? In other words,
are they consistent or inconsistent with your actions? Cite a situation.
I always demonstrate these values through my actions especially in dealing
with my students. My patience was tested when I handled 34 groups who
will be presenting their research proposal. Despite of the hectic schedule
and rush, I remain approachable and kind to the students who submitted
late, considering their situations too.

3. How do you integrate these values in your teaching?

I believe that our values is within us and whatever we do it will be reflected to
it. In teaching, teachers need to be patient in dealing diverse learners.
Teachers need to be kind and approachable to create an atmosphere that is
1 TEACHER INDUCTION PROCGRAM (MODULE 2)
conducive for learning. So in teaching, I will integrate it on my ways on
dealing with my students.
B. My Emotional Maturity
1. Encircle at least 10 feelings from the inventory below that you experience
most of the time while in school.

2. What situations usually trigger negative or uncomfortable emotions in

you?
Usually when it comes to doing a follow-up with the students who
missed projects and activities. Sometimes, my effort of convincing them
and giving them a chance to submit stressed me out because it seems
that they don’t care.
3. If a student anonymously posted on facebook something derogatory about
you, how would you react or what would you do?
I will be sad and be mad for sure. In order to resolve, I will personally
message my student or talk to him/her in person asking the reason why
he/she did it. I will politely ask him/her to delete it and orient him that
posting something that is derogatory about anyone on social media may be
subject to a crime and he/she can be sued.

4. How do you feel if a student does not meet a deadline?

I am disappointed every time they failed to submit on time. Although
it happens most of the time, I remain calm and chances are given in order to
submit it for them not to fail. It is really disappointing.
5. What do you do when others stress you?
When others stressed me out, I convince myself that those people had
encountered some problems in their lives that they did that. I just smile and
keep quiet. Sometimes, I shared my sentiments with my trusted office mates
to release the stress inside me.

2 TEACHER INDUCTION PROCGRAM (MODULE 2)

D. Me and Others

1. What group of people do you like to hang out with?

I’d like to hang out with people who had the same background with me in terms
of achievements, status in life, hobbies, attitudes and values. Hanging out
with people similar to my background makes me comfortable to open up with
them and share my experiences.

2. Who are your role models? Give at least 3. What make you look up to and
admire these people?
My role models are my parents and my professor in college. I admire my
father’s determination to send us to school that’s why he worked diligently
in the farm. I admire my mother’s patience and creativity which made me
who I am today. My professor in college taught us not only the lessons in
our major but also realities in life.

3. How does your personality change as you associate with different groups of
people? Why do you think it changes?
I think my personality doesn’t change but rather my behavior or attitudes
in terms of associating with other people. I behave casually when it comes
to my close friends and colleagues while I behave prim and proper when
facing the school principal and supervisors and other high-ranking officials.
I think it naturally changes due to human instinct and ideas perceived by
the human mind. When I see people with position, an intimidating aura
rises causing me to behave politely.

4. What kind of school head brings out the best in you?

I think the school head who sees my potential could bring out the best in
me. The school head who gives me a break where I can show my talents and
skills. I like a school head who compliments me of my achievements and
appreciates my effort to develop programs and activities that will be helpful
to the students. I believe that appreciation of my work would bring the best
in me. This would make me feel like being appreciated and that I contributed
to the school’s development which will help me to do more and better and
better.

5. How do you involve parents in the learning process?

I involve parents though giving them feedbacks about the performance of
their child. In this way, they will be informed about how their child’s
performance, problems encountered and outputs needed to submit.

6. What kind of people do you find it difficult to work with? Cite your reason.
I find it hard to work with self-centered people. They are the hard ones to
deal with and it seems that they can’t be corrected or won’t accept
corrections. It’s a pain. They always think they’re always right.

3 TEACHER INDUCTION PROCGRAM (MODULE 2)

7. What do I value most in a pupil/student?
I value my student’s experiences and attitudes. I am always considerate to
students who are working to support their education. In addition, I prefer a
student with good manners rather than with good grades. This is why I
always impart them the values that they need in order to survive school.

8. As a teacher, in what area/s do I feel I need improvement?

I need to improve my classroom management skills which is very important
in teaching-learning process.

 What benefit/s you have gained with each milestone?
A parent came to see me to ask the status of her child.
Situation/ Unfortunately, her child had three failed subjects in the previous
Task grade with additional 3 failed grades in the current semester
enrolled in.

I talked to the parent kindly and offered her solutions to the

Action problem of her child by doing a modular activity. I also talked to
the child and told him to go back to his previous teachers to give
him remediation on his failed subjects.

Result Unfortunately, the student failed to do what I asked him to and

became habitually absent instead. Sad to say, the students failed.

1. Why do core behavioral competencies count in your personal development?

It is because it involves the emotional and intellectual aspects of an individual.
It refers to my personal aspect as a person which could affect my work and
duties.

2. What are the domains where your strengths and weaknesses lie? How will you
use or improve them to help you as a teacher?
My strengths lie on the social regard for learning and diversity of learners while
my weakness lies on the curriculum.
My strengths enable me to be more aware of my mission as a teacher to be
considerate of my learner’s diversity and needs. It helps me improve my ways
of interacting with my learners to create an atmosphere that promotes
learning. On the other hand, my weakness helped me to identify the areas
needed to enhance in order to improve my teaching.

12 TEACHER INDUCTION PROCGRAM (MODULE 2)

3. Why do self-assessment and peer validation matter in your professional
development?
Self-assessment is very important for me to check how I was doing while peer
validation corrects my self-assessment if what I perceived to myself is right. It
matters because according to Johari’s window, there are 4 windows of
awareness and competence of a person. It includes those you know that others
don’t know while there is a window that you don’t know while the others know
about you. Peer validation would help me know the side of myself that I am not
aware of that most people see in me.
4. What makes your plan for professional development workable?
It is workable because the profession requires it in work, thus it can be really
done.
REFLECTION
In your journal, write concrete ways that would help you become a better
teacher.
Becoming a teacher doesn’t stop upon receiving a permanent order and approved
appointments signed by the civil service. As they say, learning is a lifelong process and it
applies to teachers too. The first year of teaching is full of adjustments. It’s the time where
neophyte teachers like me are observant on how the system of DepEd works. Terms and
acronyms were being familiarized in order to relate with the co-teachers in the workplace.
Beyond the paperworks, there is a more important aspect where teachers should strive
hard to become better, that is in imparting knowledge to the students. In other words, the
teaching-learning process. Personally, I am shocked to be assigned in a senior high school
because the subjects are so much different from junior high school. To teach a subject
which I also find difficult kills me double. How could I teach my students a subject in
which I am also on the process of learning? Well, thank God it works somehow. These are
the concrete ways that could help me become a better teacher:

1. Be updated. I should be updated with the requirements or trend in the subjects

I teach. Seek additional resources if needed. This could widen my knowledge
towards it.
2. Get connected. Just like a WiFi connection, I ought to connect with my co-
teachers who had more experiences in order to gain insights from them. Their
experiences may serve as my starting point to innovate my own ways.
3. Be creative. Yes, we can be creative and sometimes I am afraid to try this
thinking that there is a standard set by the curriculum guide. But I think,
teachers who are creative are better than teachers relying solely on the guide.
4. Be a role model. A teacher should be a person that students could look up to.
How can we discipline students if they see us being a hardheaded teachers who
wouldn’t follow the order of the principal? By establishing an image of a
respected person, students would follow whatever you do and say.
5. Be organized. Be organized in all aspects, in lessons, in documents…. -
everything! Being organized helps me to set a clear goal and tasks at the same
time activities for the students.

As the years go by, for sure, I will become better and better through the experiences I had
in school in dealing diverse learners and diverse teachers.

ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENT

Assessment 1. Case Analysis: How Do I Budget?

The case study that you are about to read is adopted from Next Gen Personal Finance
(NGPF).

Sharon thought back her conversation with Alana last month. All of
Sharon’s friends knew who to turn to if they had money questions and
problems. Sharon has been a secondary teacher for four years. Alana, her
friend and co-teacher, has been experiencing financial stress for the past years.
Alana asked Sharon what she could do to manage her money more effectively.
After Sharon answered with a one word answer, Alana asked “How do I
budget?”

Sharon asked Alana to describe her goals and current spending habits.
Alana responded in the following way:

“I totally freaked out after talking with my parents. They were asking
me to help send my younger sister to college. College costs a lot of
money and my parents tell me now that they expect me to pay for my
sister’s board and lodging expenses which I estimate to be 70,000 per
year. That’s so unfair. I have no idea how I can make both ends meet
given that additional responsibility. Something needs to change, but I
don’t know where to start.”

15 TEACHER INDUCTION PROCGRAM (MODULE 2)

Sharon developed a basic plan for Alana to track every peso she spent
over the course of a month. Alana collected all her receipts in a shoebox
and reviewed them with Sharon at the end of the month:
 Food: lunch and snacks at Jollibee/Chow king - 5,000 per month
 Transportation: 2,000 per month
 Clothes: 3 trips to the mall with friends @ 4,000.00
 Shoes: 1 pair @ 1,500.00
 Cell phone/internet load : 1,500.00
 Movies: 4 movies - 4,000
 Personal/beauty care: 2,000.00

To help make sense of all of this information, Sharon asked Alana to

organize the information by using the budget template provided below. In
the category column, she would list all of her various expenses. She would
then make a judgment call about whether each expense was a Want or a
Need. In the Monthly Cost column, she would total up the cost for each of
the expenses. In the last column, she would calculate how much that item
was as a percentage of her total costs. This would help her determine
where she was spending most of her money in the past month.

Answer the questions applying the principles and tips on financial management
that you learned.
Help Alana realize her spending by completing this chart with the information
provided above:
Percentage of
Category Want/ Need Monthly Cost
Total Cost
Movies Want 4 000 20%
Food Need 5 000 25%
Clothes/ Mall
Want 4 000 20%
Shopping
Cellphone bill Want 1 500 7.5%
Shoes Want 1 500 7.5%
Transportation Need 2 000 10%
Personal/ beauty kit Want 2 000 10%
Total Cost 20 000 100%

Answer these questions:

1. Do some quick math to compare how much Alana is spending for her needs and
for her wants.
2. What should be her goals by this time?
She Should lessen the budget for her wants and convert it for saving so that she
can use it for emergency purposes.

3. What 2-3 options would you outline for Alana to help her achieve her goals? Be
ready to discuss with her the ways to adjust her budget. Be specific with your
recommendations, highlighting specific principles in achieving financial success.
1st option: Discipline yourself. Do not spend too much on wants in order to achieve
the needs. Watching a movie with an amount of P4,000 is too much and is just a
spending leak.

16 TEACHER INDUCTION PROCGRAM (MODULE 2)

2nd option: Save before spending.

Once Sharon lent some clarity on Alana’s pay, she felt slightly
better, but she’s still really worried about her initial problem:

“This is going to be extremely difficult for me to cut anything. I

mean, I’m working hard, and think I deserve to enjoy my salary.
To save Php7,000 per month for my sister’s college education is
much of a sacrifice. This is really going to crimp my social life,
and what about my beauty maintenance?

Sharon thought back to where their conversation started last

month and how lost Alana seemed. She hoped that having Alana
prioritize her goals and review her spending would help her gain some
necessary perspective. Instead, she seemed to be at a dead-end, less
focused on solutions and more on her inability to change. Sharon
thought her best approach would be to outline a few options for Alana
so she could choose a solution that would work best for her. Sharon
had worked with enough friends before to know that these
conversations could be difficult ones, but she looked forward to solving
Alana’s money problems.

Assessment 2. “Sangla ng ATM”

Another case you will read is about the plight of teachers who have succumb to
money lenders.

It is payday again and Principal Reyes is already anticipating that

some teachers would either go to school late or go home early. As usual
they have to go to Mrs. Puntarito, a known loan shark in the
municipality. Because she holds the ATM of the borrowers including the
PIN (supposed to be confidential) they need to see her every pay day to
get the remaining balance of their salary for the month after deducting
the installment plus the interest of their loans.
Principal Reyes became more anxious this time because three of
the newly appointed teachers, just five months in the service, have
already joined the bandwagon. He observed that the young teachers’
passion for fashionable clothes, iPhones, tablets, laptops, and other
stuff have caused them to be in this complicated, embarrassing, and
demeaning situation. No wonder, even on paydays, they don’t look
happy, inspired, and rewarded.

1. Why do you think the so called “Sangla ng ATM” is happening to teachers and
personnel of the department?
This is happening maybe because they loaned a money for different purposes
which may be personal and urgent. Borrowing money in times of need resulted from
lack of emergency fund allotted to urgent expenses which are deemed necessary.
Failure to save is the reason and maybe lack of financial literacy. In addition to the
low income, most teachers are the bread winner of the family. Many members of the
17 TEACHER INDUCTION PROCGRAM (MODULE 2)
family are depending on them, thus, budget is most of the time, not enough to
support the needs of the family.

2. How can the teachers get out of that situation?

Teachers need to be financially literate in order to manage their finances properly.
If possible, invest the money for the future.

3. What recommendations can you give them?

As a newly-hired teacher I believe it starts with discipline. Usually, upon receiving
the payment we opted to reward ourselves by buying what we want, eating the food we
like and hang out with friends by travelling anywhere. A financially literate individual
must start first to save first the money before spending it or prior to receiving the
salary, make a budget first.

Assessment 3. The Debt Test

This Debt Test is also excerpted from Money Management International E-Book on
Financial Literacy: Your 30 Step Path to Financial Wellness.

A ‘yes’ to any of these questions is a sign that you may need to make debt payoff a
priority.
Write your reflection here.

Culture may be one of the reason why teachers and other professionals engaged in
borrowing money. An extended family culture of the Filipinos would mean extended
obligations in the family. This could be the reason why the budget is off which often leads
to borrowing money.
We often blame a low salary for this, saying it’s not enough. Yes, it may be part of it
but sometimes it starts with self-discipline. There are people who keeps on borrowing
money who never return it.

Assessment 4. Take the 30-day Challenge

Things to do:
1. Get a transparent jar. You can decorate it if you desire.
2. Prepare a Saving Chart (A) as shown below.
3. In the chart, write down your target amount.
4. Make a daily saving to develop your saving habit. As you start saving, make an
entry to the chart (A) every day.
5. In another chart (B), track where your saved money goes: ex. save in the bank,
put in stock market or put in a business.
6. Note: Sunday is a recess day for saving.

REFLECTION
Portfolio Making

o In every plan that you make, you are asked to make a reflection. Put them in
a portfolio.
o At the end of the year, reflect on how this session affects you as a person
and as a teacher in terms of your financial status.
o State your commitment on what you will do for the next year.
o You are encouraged to do the suggested plans the next year around or
improve them if you wish.

This session on financial literacy made me realized how important it is to be

financially literate in order to manage finances. However, what really
becomes so hard to manage is the responsibilities that people around us
expected to do and the amount of money we receive. How can we manage
such amount to many responsibilities given to us by our parents? It’s hard.
In fact, I didn’t even get to reward myself thinking that it would be better to
pay bills than eat pizza.
Self-discipline, yes, to the point that even though I have a job and income
monthly, still, it isn’t enough to sustain the demands of my family.
How I wish I could manage money properly this time and be better.

school knowing that its Monday and you need to be early for you it’s your turn to lead the
morning activity of the flag ceremony. The food is already set on the table and its aroma

REFLECTION
Journal Writing
 In what concrete ways does the session help me become a more health
conscious teacher in promoting a positive health habit?

School communities are increasingly becoming places where healthy habits

can flourish. The responsibility for teaching children healthy habits does not
fall only on teachers though. A healthy school community
involves all partners and sends children the same message in the home,
school, and community. Children who attend a healthy school can make
informed, healthy decisions that affect their own lives and the lives of their
families.

The session helped me realized that the teacher should be:

o Incorporating healthy eating and physical activity across the curriculum
in fun and creative ways
o Providing professional development opportunities for teachers and other
support staff to teach and promote healthy eating and being active.
o Providing a welcoming eating environment that encourages positive social
interaction.
o Scheduling more physical education and physical activity
o Ensuring that adequate time is spent on developing fundamental motor
skills.
o Packing a healthy lunch and taking the time to eat it

ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENT

A. Review the basic concepts between sex and gender. Provide your answer before
every item by writing Sex or Gender.
Sex male and female Sex penis and vagina

Gender weak and strong Sex XY and XX

Sex child rearing Sex masculine and feminine

Gender emotional and logical Sex husband and wife

Gender child bearing Gender mother and father

B. Answer the following questions.

1. How does gender sensitivity/responsiveness of the education system
contribute to the DepEd’s performance of its mandate?
It serves as a guide to the implementation of the programs of the department
which will treat all genders equally. The department made sure that every one
regardless of gender, are given equal opportunity to fully develop their
potentials.
2. What are the causes and effects of gender disparity?
Gender disparity naturally occurs as they are socially diverse from each other. It
is something that should not be considered a problem but rather an opportunity
to explore the differences and collaborate to work on a main goal. However,
gender disparity causes discrimination among genders which lead to
disrespecting some genders and making fun of them.

3. As a teacher, how can we create a gender sensitive/responsive

classroom/school?
As a teacher, it is my duty and responsibility to raise awareness regarding
gender sensitivity. I can start it by assigning tasks equally to everyone. Gender
sensitivity should also be integrated in the lessons across subject areas.
C. The next activity is writing the actions that you will do on a given situation. You
may also share your answer/s during the LAC Session for additional input or
discussion.
Case 1: A learner got pregnant and expected to deliver toward the end of the
school year.
This case actually happened in my class. What I did was I gave consideration to
the student by giving her modular activities so that she could have a safe
delivery.

Case 2: At the middle of the school year, you noticed an increase in absences
among the boys in your class.

I will determine the cause of the absences among the boys and visit them at
home if possible.

30 TEACHER INDUCTION PROCGRAM (MODULE 2)

Case 3: A girl student reported to you that she was harassed by her teacher.
Then another student reported same experience with the same teacher.
I will report such incident to the principal so that he/she will call the
attention of the teacher to confirm whether such complaint is true.
Case 4: Posters and other classroom materials showed gender bias and sexist
messages.
I will change the classroom structuring to a more gender sensitive
contents to promote gender equality in the classroom.

REFLECTION
Journal Writing

In what concrete ways does the session help me become a more agentive teacher in
promoting gender-fair classroom setting.
This session helped me realize how I, as a teacher, can promote awareness on gender
equality. It should start in promoting a gender-fair classroom. In schools, classroom is the
second home of the students while we are their second parents. We, should be the role
model among gender sensitivity. It should be evident to us, teachers that we treat each
students of any gender fair and square.
