My mother will be celebrating her birthday soon. I have been about
what to get her and I have finally made my decision. I will get her a branded
black leather handbag.
Although a leather handbag would be costly, I do not mind buying it
as my mother deserves it. She has sacrificed a lot for me and so it is time I
did something nice for her. It would last long and look elegant. It is also eco-
friendly as it is made of natural material and is biodegradable.
At first, I wanted to buy the handbag from an online shop. Later, I
found out that a shop in my neighborhood shopping centre was having a
sale on leather handbags. I decided to buy there instead. Apart from selling
at a cheaper price, they also have a one year warranty for the handbag.
I hope my mother loves her birthday gift.

‘Unfortunate Event’
(by: Mohamad Fitri Bin Santoso)
“Kring, kring, kring…”, the moment everyone has been waiting for as
the school bell rung, my heart pounded exceedingly fast as I could hear my
own heart beating, “dub dab, dub dab…”. After 1 year of waiting, that was
the day of our freedom; school holiday came at last. I ran as fast as I could
to the school gate and there I saw my friends; Alissa, Kristofferson and
Viktor Chenkov were waiting for me. We had planed to go on a camping trip
in a forest not too far from our school SMK Kuca Bara, Ipoh. Locals referred
that camping place as ‘Mossy Forest’, one of the hidden gems waiting to be
explored; a mysterious beautiful forest in the highlands of Mount
Brinchang, shrouded with mist as if there’s a magical aura around it and
also the second highest peak in Cameron Highlands. My uncle, Matheus
was the one who gave the idea as he will be our ‘Malim Gunung’; a term
normally used to refer to a guide who is an expert in climbing mountain.
The moment that we have been waiting for, we went there by a 4x4
wheels drive vehicle, a Ford Raptor rented by my uncle because from his
point of view, it would be easier for us to reach the base camp of the forest.
It took us 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the starting camp. We packed our
things, the usuals; tents, cooking utensils, 5 bottles of mineral water and
medicine kit for safety purposes. We hiked for 45 minutes, the steps were
slippery as we encountered all sorts of flora covered with layers of moss and
without even noticing, arrived at the camp site, we decided to camp near
the river. There were various exotic plants such as ferns, spices, orchids and
even medicinal plants that grow wildly in the moist climate. I looked at my
watch and I walked passed the unprecedented scenery; the temperature
showed the range between 10◦c and 25◦c. My friends shivered and their
hands trembled slightly because they felt cold due to the climate. We were
glad with our decision and came to this mesmerizing forest.
Then, I put up the tents meanwhile, my uncle went for fishing and
instructed Alissa to fetch the water near the river, Kristofferson to set up the
campfire and Viktor Chenkov to look for firewood. A few hours passed,
Alissa realized that Viktor went missing, he had not return from his chores.
We began to worry for him. Uncle Matheus grinned; sounded optimistic
and quote what Jeffrey Eugenides once said, “there comes a moment, when
you get lost in the woods, when the woods begin to feel like home”.
“Don’t spout nonsense uncle, this isn’t funny, Viktor maybe helplessly
screaming for help right now!” I shouted to my uncle while holding his
shoulder to show how dire the situation is at the moment. It was soon going
to be dark. My uncle immediately sprung and went to get help from the
forest rangers. 30 minutes passed, the rangers came, assured us that they
will search and find for our missing friend. They searched high and low but
to no avail.
After an hour, Kristofferson heard someone was calling for help, the
voice was coming from a nearby cave under the waterfall. It sounded very
weak as if Viktor is a having dysphonia; a symptom of injury from overuse of
the vocal cord that occurs from yelling. He was saved and told us that while
he was collecting all the firewood, he got lost so he walked around and
found a cave nearby for shelter. We thanked the forest rangers; they went
back to their office and we rested for the night. Since none of us were
injured, we decided to continue our camping trip and only went home the
next day. My uncle; Matheus did mentioned one of his famous quotes as he
lectured Viktor on his careless mistakes for newbie camper, “Good times
become good memories and bad times become good lessons” before saying
goodbyes and went back to Ipoh. It will forever be remembered as it was an
unforgettable memory of the incident that happened to our friend, Viktor
Chenkov.
