Oliveto, Oakland,
01 California
Oliveto is a pioneering Italian restaurant that features an
open layout in which both the bar and kitchen are open to
the dining area.
The owners employed a two-fold solution that enables
Building Utilities 3
them to directly control the acoustics according to how
busy the restaurant is, they did not want to simply reduce
noise inside.
They installed a passive acoustic system in the ceiling
made from sound absorbing tiles. They also installed a
combination of microphones, signal processors, and
small speakers – all discreetly incorporated within image
panels and complementing the overall aesthetic. Using
an iPad, they can directly shape the acoustics of the
restaurant to make it sound busier at quiet times and to
lower sound levels when the restaurant is busy.

Silk Metal was installed. It is another fantastic product that’s easily

installed into drop-ceiling T-grids. It works on a wide range of
frequencies, and it boasts an NRC of 0.80. Since it’s made out of
aluminum and not fiber-based, it can also be steam-cleaned, and
this should make it a very attractive option for restaurant owners
since hygiene and sanitation figure so prominently for them.

02 Boba Latte, Richardson, Texas
Boba Latte specializes in tea,
coffee, and smoothies – the
kind of environment that lends
itself to quiet conversations or
reading.
Building Utilities 3
However, their minimalist
design caused unwanted
echoing, and the owners
wanted to create an acoustic
environment which would
allow for casual conversations
while allowing customers to
relax and enjoy their time
there.
Soving the problem, it required them a small change on the restaurant’s aesthetic. They installed
colored acoustic tiles on a wall at one end of the restaurant that now acts as a sound absorber as well
as serving as an attractive accent to the overall white-on-white color scheme.

made from recycled cotton,
and they can be used easily
attached to wall panels or
suspended from ceilings as
hanging baffles. They’re as
effective as fiberglass, and
they contain no volatile
organic compounds.

Music Hall at the Āli
04 Qapu Palace, Iran
Built in the early 17th century, Ali Qapu meaning Picture A.
“great gate,” is one of the most famous palaces of
the Persian Empire’s Safavid Era. Situated on the
western side of the Naqsh-e Jahan Square in
Isfahan, Iran, this 48-meter tall, six-story building
Building Utilities 3
was built by decree of Shah Abbas I and later
expanded by Shah Abbas II.
It has many notable architectural features the most
famous of which is the sixth-story Music Hall Picture B. Carved Ceiling
(picture a.) where the king would host royal
receptions and parties. It is an example of low-tech
acoustic genius. In the Music Hall, live musicians
would play traditional Persian instruments such as
the setar, kamancheh, and daf to entertain the king
and his guests. This painting from the nearby
Chehel Sotoun palace depicts what the scene may

05 Gol Gumbaz Mausoleum, India
The Gol Gumbaz Mausoleum in Karnataka,
India, mausoleum of the king Mohammed Adil
Shah, Adil Shahi Dynasty, although it may
extremely be simple in design it is however yet
fascinating acoustically. It is one of the finest

examples of a whispering gallery in the world.
The building is comprised of a 47.5 metre high
cube. On top of it sits a 44 meter diameter
dome. Around the dome is the whispering
gallery, which allows you to hear a pin drop
from up to 40 metres away.
Noise travels around the circumference of the
