Ric: Hi! The Philippines is a country with more than 7,000 islands which means…

Jimmy: But wait, with all of these stunning sceneries, there is a harsh reality. (B-roll)
Jimmy: Several issues can be identified in the Philippines.
Eddiemel: these issues were largely influenced by different social, political, economical,
and cultural factors such as:
(shots: pera, clip kang reporters na pinatay, presyo ng bilihin sa market, church)
Recorded(edd): Income Inequality, Pres freedom, Inflation, and Religion.
Mark: This led to widespread social unrest among our Filipino citizens. (B-roll)
Recorded(Ric): It is not easy to pinpoint and list down the social problems of the
Philippines, because it is far-reaching and pervasive. The list is seemingly endless and
the problems seem to be growing every day.
Jimmy: In this video, we are going to tackle the issues that were mentioned.
Mark: And answer the question on what could we do about it?

Income Inequality (B-roll)

Eddiemel: When I was a kid I was taught there is one planet for the human race which
is called planet earth. (B-roll)
Eddiemel: But now that I am older I realized, that is a lie.
recorded: there are two planets, not one. Planet for the rich and planet for the poor.
This is income inequality and it’s a big deal right now!
Eddiemel: Income inequality has become a particularly pressing issue based on
gathered data.
recorded: the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Philippines has been growing at a
rate of 6.8%
Eddiemel: Let’s take a look at a place called Naga City.

recorded: Naga, officially known as the City of Naga or the Pilgrim City of Naga, is a
1st class independent component city in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. There are
beautiful buildings and malls where upper-class people can shop but if you look from a
different perspective, you see this. (shots of homeless people in Naga). Homelessness.
In Naga, the rich and the poor live in the same city but they don’t live together. In fact,
they rarely interact. (B-roll)

Recorded(jim): Freedom of the press is guaranteed by the Philippines’ Constitution.
Jimmy: Yet the island nation has become one of the most dangerous places in the
world to exercise that right.
recorded: Journalists endured verbal abuse, online attacks, libel charges, and physical
harassment for years under the strongman rule of Rodrigo Duterte. The National Union
of Journalists of the Philippines reports that at least 23 journalists have been killed since
2016, and many expect the new administration will be worse.

recorded: On October 3, 2022, Percy Lapid, a radio journalist and radio broadcaster,
was shot dead while on his way home in Las Piñas, Metro Manila, Philippines.
Jimmy: This signaled the hostility of the new administration toward our Filipino
journalists.

Inflation
(Video showing mark asking for the price of goods in the market)
Mark: In recent months, the country has been experiencing rising prices of goods and
services. That is what we call Inflation.
recorded: Inflation can be compared to the speedometer of a car. When inflation is
rising, we are stepping on a car's gas pedal which is resulting in an increase in the
prices of goods and services.
The 2022 annual rates of inflation constitute an acceleration of price increases given
that the average annual inflation rate for 2021 was 3.5 percent and 2.4 percent for 2020.
Mark: So, what is the main reason?
recorded: For starters, rising food inflation is the main driver of the inflation rate in the
Philippines this year due to the recent spike in sugar prices.
Mark: And if you can notice the Filipino people today, they are suffering.
recorded: Some can't even get a single food on their plate resulting in underweight
families.

Religion
(shows a church)
Ric: In life, there are three things you shouldn't talk about.
recorded: Money, Politics, and Religion. I was born and raised as a Catholic, I pray 3
times a day and go to church every Sunday. I was taught Catholicism was the only way
to heaven and I believed it.
Ric: Then I started getting intrigued with non-Catholic people.
recorded: Muslims said that Islam was the only way to heaven, Jews said they were
the chosen one, and Hindus said there is not one God, there are millions. And my
atheist friends made fun of all of us. The more people I met, the more I realize.
Ric: Everyone thinks their religion is right.
recorded: The Philippines is very rich in terms of different religions. Churches like this,
and this, and this can even be found in a single city only.
However, it can affect perceptions, intentions as well as work behavior. Different beliefs
and ethical principles can cause conflict among co-workers or even lead to religious
discrimination.

Jimmy: With all those issues that we have encountered today. One question is still
circulating in my mind.
recorded: What can we do about it?
Eddiemel: There are many possible answers to this question.
Mark: But one thing we can do is to start small.
Narration(Ric): We can start with ourselves and extend it to our families, loved ones,
friends, and other people around us. If we can't do anything about the bigger issues
surrounding us, we should at least take time to help those who are under our care.
