Malaysian Art Education Influence

This document discusses the influence of education on the development of Malaysian contemporary art. It outlines four key art groups that emerged in Malaysia and their styles. The first group focused on individualistic expression and naturalism, influenced by the British educational system. The second group, the Wednesday Art Group, emphasized self-expression through landscapes, figures and still lifes using styles like post-impressionism and cartooning. The third group, Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung, viewed art as a medium for cultural values and used realistic styles depicting human figures and landscapes. The last group introduced batik painting in the 1950s with semi-abstract landscapes and motifs. Each group made unique contributions to Malaysian art through their chosen themes

MALAYSIAN CONTEMPORARY ART - EDUCATION

This week’s lecture is a continuation of Malaysian Contemporary Art. One of the factors

that influence the style of Malaysian Art is education. The westernization process benefited

greatly from the contribution of the British educational system. As a result, it was believed that

this educational system was responsible for the emergence of an artistic concept focused on

individualistic expression, stated in an expressive and naturalistic style.

The third group is the Wednesday Art Group. The theme for this art group is landscape,

human figures, and still life. Basically, this group artwork show art as a medium of self-

expression. Their art style is post-impressionism, cubism, Picasso, impasto, and cartoon. This

group was called “Wednesday” because they always meet on Wednesday. There are a few

pieces of artwork from this group and one of them is “Rumah Rakit-Kuala Lipis” by Peter

Harris, 1956. He usually expresses his emotion by using warm colors. Next, “Bermain Biji

Saga” by Dzulkifli Buyaong, 1962. His style in art is cartoon-ish style.

The fourth art group that emerged still in Kuala Lumpur is Angkatan Pelukis

Semenanjung. The art principle of this group is art as a medium of cultural values. They

focused on the human figure, portrait, and landscape. The style is mostly realistic. The first

artwork is “Potret Diri” by Mohd. Hoessein Enas, 1958. The next artwork is “Gadis Melayu” by

Mohd Hoessein Enas, 1959. Mohd Hossein Enas always portray the looks of Malay people in

his artworks.
Lastly, another chapter of the artwork is Batik Painting which was introduced in 1950.

The theme is landscape. The medium is batik or wax. The style is semi-abstract. The first

artwork is “Kampung Nelayan” by Chuah Thean Teng. The motif he portrays in this artwork is

geometrical and abstract. Next, “Fabrik Merah, Biru, Hijau” by Syed Saharuddin Syed Bakeri,

1969. Other than that, “Burung Dajal. this artwork is very interesting because of the title and

the motif he used is the motif of kain batik. In all his artwork, he used the same design and

motif in his canvas. The other artwork is “Tanpa Tajuk: Siri Dalaman” by Mastura Abdul

Rahman, 1990.

In conclusion, every art group has its own artwork style and principle. The artists from

each group portray their artwork in a great way. They mostly show the expression in their

artwork and relate it with people in their era or generation.
