Text 10
The homing instinct of pigeons has made them popular for the sport of
pigeon racing. A young bird’s training begins when it is about seven weeks old.
This training consists of giving it short exercise flights, teaching it to recognize
its
owner’s call, and teaching it to enter inside of its cote, or home. The next phase
9
of training is started when the bird is about four months old. The pigeon is
taken short distances from its home and is released. These flights are gradually
extended from three miles to 100 miles as bird’s stamina increases.

When the bird is ready, the owner may enter it in a race against other
trained pigeons. The owner takes their birds to a central meeting place where all
the birds are tagged and released simultaneously. A bird is not considered to be
home until it has entered its cote and its owner has removed the tag and inserted
it into a clock that records the bird’s arrival time. Because owners live at varying
distances from the release point, the first bird home may not be the fastest flier.
The bird that makes the best time in flying the distance home is the winner.

Tornadoes are the most violent storms in nature. An average of 800

tornadoes is reported each year, resulting in 80 deaths and 1,500 injuries.
Tornadoes are a worldwide phenomenon, touching down in every continent save
Antarctica.
Tornadoes form when different temperatures and humidity meet. In the
United States, warm, wet winds travel north from the Gulf of Mexico in the
spring and summer, where they meet cold, dry, south-moving Canadian fronts.
Generally, warm air rises, but when the two fronts meet, the cold air can trap
the warm air beneath it. Because the warm air cannot move upward, it begins to
rotate. As the sun heats the ground, more warm air continues to rise, until finally
the mass is strong enough to push through the cold air barrier. The rising warm

11
air pushes the cold air beneath it, creating a rotating column that can span up to
10 miles, while twisting at speeds exceeding 200 mph (322 km/h).
The spinning air may remain unseen until it picks up enough dust and
debris for its shape to be visible. Tornadoes can last for a minute or an hour, and
they can tear a damage path up to 10 miles (16 kilometers) long.
Tornadoes forming over warm water are known as waterspouts, and are
most common in southern states and along the Gulf Coast. Occasionally,
waterspouts can move inward.

A. Tornadoes can twist up to 322 kilometres per hour.
B. Tornadoes are the most benevolent storms in nature.
C. Waterspouts are tornadoes forming over warm water.
