1 System Overview
The OMS 846 is an Integrated Access Device (IAD) for use in fiber-based
networks that connects end customers to operator networks. It handles both
Ethernet and TDM traffic and is able to interface to a TDM backbone network.
It can also be used as a Multi-Service Provision Platform (MSPP) to build the
infrastructure in the metro access area.
The OMS 846 is a very flexible network component that can be used in star
networks, ring networks, chained networks and meshed networks. It supports
both Terminal Multiplexing (TM) and Add and Drop Multiplexing (ADM)
applications.
The OMS 846 is a fully working standalone SDH Network Element (NE). An
Element Manager (EM) or a Network Manager (NM) that supervises both the
Ethernet and TDM parts of the system manages the OMS 846 remotely. Local
and remote craft interfaces are also supported with a similar user interface.
The main application for OMS 846 is to use it as an ADM. A number of sites are
connected together with a ring network topology. The OMS 846 is used to drop
traffic in the different sites. This is shown in Figure 1.
The OMS 846 is typically deployed in the operator's point of presence, but
it may also be deployed in customer sites. If more than one customer shall
be handled in a site, the OMS 846 must be mounted in a room that is only
accessible for the operators.
The OMS 846 can be connected to one or multiple customers at a site. The
aggregate capacity and the number of physical interfaces limit the number of
customers. The physical interfaces can be E1, GE or FE.
The OMS 846 provides a number of services at the sites (e.g. TDM leased
lines, ISDN PRA, Ethernet leased lines and Internet access).

customer premises before sending it to the operators network. The IAD delivers
the services from the operators to the end customer.

Visual indicators (LEDs) provide the status of the OMS 846. The LEDs are
placed on the connector side. The description of the indicators are as shown
as below:
2.3.3.1 Instruction
The OMS 846 supports all SFP types given in the appropriate module variant
description. A list of all SFP manufacturers and product numbers qualified for
the OMS 846 is available on the Ericsson extranet product catalog.
KB0000177A
The following events are reported when inserting (and removing) SFPs.
If an SFP is plugged in that is not on the qualified list, the system will still try to
put it in service, but in this case we cannot guarantee for regular behavior.
SFP Optical TX and RX Level can be read and reported via the network
management system. Refer to OMS 800 CRAFT R1.3 User Guide, Reference
[1] for more details.
The OMS 846 can be equipped with AC power adaptor to use AC power.
For more information about the power port or the power cable connector, see
the document Cable Diagrams, Reference [2].

3.2 Cabling
The document Cable Diagrams, Reference [2] provides the cable connections,
specification and compliance information for the OMS 800 family members.
The following cables are available for the OMS 846:
• Alarm cables
• VT-100 cable
• LAN cable

3.3 Environment
This section prides the environment information of the OMS 846.
The OMS 846 can be connected to a -48 VDC power at temperatures down
to -35 C without being damaged. Nevertheless, the unit does not operate
outside the defined operating temperature area. When the temperature has
been below the defined "operating temperature area" and heats up into the
"operating temperature area", the unit will automatically go into service, without
any action from an operator.
The power supply interface meets the requirements as specified in ETS 300
132-2.
The equipment meets the grounding and bonding requirements of ETS 300 253.
The shelf is made of metal and it is connected to signal ground inside. The
shelf has a dedicated ground connector for connection to the external ground.
The screens of all external cables are connected to the signal ground/shelf
ground.

3.4.1 Hardware
This section provides the hardware information.
The main card has a power supply that can be connected to two independent
power supply sources. The power sources are connected with wire or diodes in
the main card. The main card has an internal fuse to protect the external power
sources against internal power failures. The internal power supply generates a
number of different voltages.
3.4.2 MTBF
The Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) are shown in the table below.
Optical modules are included in the calculation for the relevant modules.
Table 11 MTBF
Module MTBF (Years)

4 AC Power Adaptor
The OMS 846 does not include an internal AC power supply. It can still be
powered from an AC power source with the help of an external AC power
adaptor.
The power adaptor has a standard two pin power connector (IEC 320) and a
number of different power cords can be used for the different markets.
The output voltage from the power supply is -48 V and is directly connected to
the power connector on the OMS 846.
The 230V AC supply input is provided via a 2-pin power connector (IEC 320),
with the following pin-out:
The -48 V DC supply output is provided via a 4-pin power connector (Molex
Mini-fit 4x1), with the following pin-out:
Special cables for the high-density E1 modules are provided for connection
between OMS 846 and a patch-panel. For more details of the patch panels and
LFH cables, see Cable Diagrams, Reference [2].
