CATALOGUE CONTENTS

The majority of the collection are Dr Hossack’s own works, some signed, some not; some framed,
some not. He also had a selection of other artists’ works, also presented for sale.

This Catalogue is arranged, and the pictures are numbered, in sections as follows:

000 series – framed paintings by W.S.Hossack and other artists (38 pictures)

300 series – pencil, and ink, sketches, unframed, by Dr Hossack (37 pictures)

400 series – watercolours, unframed, by Duncan Bruce (9 pictures)

500 series – smaller watercolours, unframed, by Dr Hossack (56 pictures)

600 series – larger watercolours, unframed, by Dr Hossack (51 pictures)

700 series – larger unframed pictures by other artists (6 pictures)

Of these 198 pictures, twenty-two are double-sided, effectively resulting in a collection of 220
pictures, although some have more than one image on a page.

Images of each of these 220 pictures are included in this catalogue, against which relevant
information is given as follows:
Picture title – always in bold. If in “inverted commas” it is as named by the artist; if not just a
descriptive name has been used;
Artist name – if in bold then the picture is signed and the next line also says “signed”. If in
ordinary type then the picture is believed to be by the artist because of its style, or because
of other pictures around it. The word “unsigned” is used for clarity.
What medium has been used. All pictures (except the three cross-stitch works and the photos)
are on artists card of various thicknesses, often as taken out of an artists wire-bound book,
unless the description specifically details, such as “paper” meaning thinner than the other
pictures. We generally are not aware of the paper or card quality of the framed pictures.
The measurements are given, always width x height, in cm. Where a picture is mounted and/or
framed, an outside measurement and the size of the visible picture, are both given.

This Catalogue is offered:

a/ in low resolution that can be downloaded as a pdf from the Friends of Chalmers Hospital
facebook page, or by emailing [email protected] asking for a copy. If you would
like a higher resolution image of one or two particular sketches or paintings then please

ARTISTS

A brief summary of the artists within this Collection that we have been able to trace:

Dr W.S. Hossack (1929 – 2022) born in Macduff and lived here much of his life, serving as a well-
known and well-liked local general practitioner from 1956. He had several interests including his
art. For more information refer to the board that will be on display during the Exhibition.

H A Barclay is believed to be local artist Heather Barclay; see 038.

Duncan Bruce (1919 – 2002) spent much of his life recording the
British landscape from Cornwall to Scotland; allegedly his interest
started as a young soldier during WWII when he felt some scenes
deserved to be recorded. He lived in Sussex but had Banff
connections. His grandfather was the Rev William Stratton Bruce,
Minister in Banff from 1871 to 1925. The Hossack’s got to know
Duncan Bruce by chance, with Dr Hossack meeting him on a
painting course he took on the west coast. Subsequently the
Hossacks parked their caravan on his farm in Sussex for holidays.
Bill Hossack was introduced to the works of various other Sussex
artists through Duncan, and two paintings of Duncan by Dr Hossack
are part of this Catalogue (512a, 513a). Duncan did visit Macduff, probably on more than one
occasion, and various Duncan Bruce paintings of Banff and Macduff scenes exist, but not in this
Collection. This photo was amongst the various Duncan Bruce paintings in the Hossack
Collection. See 003, 004, 401-409, 512.

Roland Spencer Ford (1902 – 1990) is a well reputed artist, widely travelled around UK and
Europe, with paintings sometimes selling in the low thousands. See 024.

Tom Groom was a Sussex Artist, now with an annual Award issued in his name, often painting at
various places along the English south coast. See 005.

J Colquhoun Mcilwraith was a Scottish artist. Three of his works are included in the Hossack
Collection; see 001, 701, 702.

Myra McShane is a local based artist, born in Somerset but moved to Scotland, and used to have
a gallery at the bottom of Duff St in Macduff. See 036, 076.

Jack Merriott (1901 – 1968) living and working mostly in Sussex, and later in Cornwall. A number
of UK Galleries hold his works which are described as having “a breezy freshness, crisp with well-
controlled colour.” There is one picture in the Hossack Collection (018).

Diane Sutherland is the daughter of Gavin Sutherland of “Sailing” fame, and for a few years
painted in this area. See 705. Currently is a botanical artist.

David Thomas Rose (1871 – 1964) was a watercolourist brought up in Nairn, Scotland, trained as
a civil engineer, going to art classes in Glasgow and with links to the “Glasgow Boys”. He
travelled quite widely with his job, and his subject matters are varied. His works appear in several
UK Galleries. There are four pictures in the Hossack Collection (013, 017, 019, 028).

Ernest Savage (1906 – 2017) was a Sussex landscape artist and whose works are widely sold
around the world. Dr Hossack went on an art course run by Ernest Savage and shortly after
purchased the one painting in this Collection (021). He was a close friend of Jack Merriott.

Enid Alison Western (1931 – 2016) was a well known Sussex floral water colourist. Two pictures
are included in the Hossack Collection. See 029, 033.
