Context 0333

Production stoppage, operating loss or even complete loss of a site: the consequences of a fire can quickly take on dramatic proportions.
The source of 20 to 30% of all fires is electrical, and 62% of these affect production sites. (Sources: INRS/ARIA - French national research
& safety institute/French accident database)
The equipment most likely to be involved in an electrical fire is transformers, circuit breakers and power enclosures.
These enclosures, which are the nerve centres of industrial processes, are generally custom-made. The damage resulting from a fire can
cause a lengthy stoppage because of the time it takes to re-supply the equipment contained in the enclosures.
The main causes of fires in power enclosures are:
- Overheating of the cables due to an overload, inadequate ventilation or a faulty installation
- A short-circuit causing an electric arc
- An insulation fault causing abnormal circulation of the current between a receiver and an exposed conductive part or between
a receiver and earth
- Faulty contacts (such as loose or oxidised connections) causing abnormal resistance and overheating
- Lightning
- An electrostatic discharge
