Exploring Literary Genres and Conventions

Literary genres include prose (fiction and nonfiction), poetry, and drama. Each genre also has literary
conventions and elements they are known for. In the previous lessons, you were able to explore the
different elements of the different literary genres and were able to analyze the themes and techniques
used in the texts. Let us try to recall the different literary genres and their conventions in order for you to
start writing drafts of a short literary piece.

Literary conventions mean the combination of norms and standards created in the literary texts. Each
literary genre possesses certain elements and conventions that produce remarkable effects (Gallo &
Oliveros, 2017). Thus, they give identity for each genre.

Fiction is a literary genre that tells something based from imagination rather than factual. It requires
creativity in inventing the plot, characters, setting, themes and other elements that will make the story
complete. These elements then give identity that the text is a prose. Fiction is also categorized by
subgenres defined by content, technique and tone. Some of these subgenres include short story, fable,
legend, novel, fantasy, romance, mystery, folktales, and others that are created from creative imagination.

Creative Nonfiction is a literary genre that uses styles and techniques to create factually accurate
narratives. It uses the techniques that fiction writers, poets, and playwrights employ in creatively
presenting factual narratives about real people and real events. Forms within this genre include biography,
autobiography, memoir, travelogue, literary journalism, personal and reflective essays, and other
nonfiction narratives presented in creative ways.

Poetry is a literary genre that uses verse and rhythmic writing to create emotional responses. Literary
norms in poetry refer to how structure and rhythm are linked to content and theme. We can recognize that
the text is a poem because it is composed of lines, meters, stanzas, rhymes, rhythm, and other poetic
conventions. Thus, patterns and techniques contribute to the overall meaning of a literary text.

Drama is a literary genre that is meant to be acted out in front of an audience. Drama reveals situations
through its characters, setting, and plot. It is filled with turning points or twists and climaxes that help
develop the characters. It also brings out issues that evoke in the audience emotions and allow them to

relate to the story and to the actors. Dramas can be in a form of comedy, tragedy or a combination of both.
Thus, playwrights nowadays continue inject creativity in their masterpieces.

Different genres may have varied forms, techniques, and conventions. These conventions then
define informational and entertainment purposes and creates remarkable effect in literature.

Pointers in Writing a Draft of a Short Literary Piece

Writing a literary piece is one challenging activity for high school students. You need to have motivation
and need to exert effort to start writing. Many writers, including students and even teachers, find that
beginning to write can be intimidating and challenging. It is said that writing is a process, and following the
process then will eventually help you to start and finish a draft of a short or long piece. Here are the
pointers that you should remember in writing a literary piece:

1. Choosing a Topic

This is the first and one of the most important things that you have to consider in starting to write. Thus,
choosing a good general topic for a short piece is an essential step. Sometimes, your teacher will give you
idea to start one, and in some instances they will ask you to come up with a topic on your own. Thus, in
choosing a topic you need to think carefully considering the purpose of the activity and your target
audience.

The following are the pointers or tips that can be used in choosing a topic:

a. using your own life and personal experiences;

b. using everyday observations;
c. reading different kinds of texts or documents;
d. asking questions that start with who, what, where, when, how;
e. idea mapping and brainstorming;
f. searching the net responsibly;

2. Formulating a Thesis Statement

Formulating a thesis statement is one important consideration in writing any literary piece because
it provides a specific focus for your topic and will let you organize the thoughts that you will include in your
text.

A thesis statement is a sentence that mostly appears towards the end of your introduction. This
will give ideas or points that will be presented in the whole text. For whatever topic your teacher gives you,
you must ask yourself, “What is the big idea of my text?”, “What do I want to say about it?”. Asking and
then answering these questions are important to forming a thesis statement that is accurate and specific,
strong, and confident.

3. Organizing and Developing Ideas

Choosing a topic and formulating a thesis statement will help you organize and develop your ideas
clearly and smoothly. Organizing ideas will let you choose what to present first, second, third, and so on in
your writing. Without a clear organization and development of ideas, your reader could become confused
and lose interest.

Effective writers prepare a formal outline to organize their main ideas and supporting details in the
order they will be presented. You can then use the following organizational techniques to help you stay
focused: chronological order, spatial order and, order of importance. Thus, a strong organization and
development of ideas allow you to articulate, analyze, and clarify your thoughts.

4. Using any Literary Conventions of Genre

Literary conventions are important part of any literary genres – fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and
drama – since they give identity of each genre. Thus, it is very important to employ the appropriate

conventions as to how your ideas will be presented. Remember the literary conventions of genre presented
in the previous lessons in order literary piece to have novelty and creativity, and meaningful outcome.

5. Ensuring that theme and technique are effectively developed

The theme is the main subject that is being discussed in a piece of writing or presentations. The
theme can be conveyed using the combination of literary techniques, elements and conventions of genre.
Thus, it is important to ensure that the theme as well as the literary techniques are effectively developed. If
a literary piece lacks theme, the reader might have difficulty connecting with it.

Themes can be universal and can be understood by any reader regardless of culture and country
that he or she is in. Common themes include love, good vs. evil, courage and perseverance, coming of age,
circle of life, prejudice, greed, beating the odds, and others. You need also to remember to write the theme
in complete thought or idea.
