Candyfloss Cardigan

The Candyfloss Cardigan screams “go big or go home”. It’s pastel colours,
oversized cut and fluffy yarn, do its name justice and will add a pop of
summer fun to even the greyest of winter days. A one size pattern knit on
chunky needles make this a beginner friendly garment that is sure to become
a wardrobe staple!

Finished Measurements

Chest Circumference: 120cm


Length from shoulder to hem: 60cm
Sleeve Length: 38cm

Suggested Yarn: Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk held triple

Yarn Requirements: 75g of Colour 2 and 3, 150g of Colour 1 and 4


Colour codes for pictured cardigan (bottom up)
Colour 1: 02 Light Grey
Colour 2: 12 Powder Pink
Colour 3: 14 Light Green Grey
Colour 4: 01 Off White

Needle Size: Interchangeable Circular needle with 9mm on right needle (for knit stitches) and
8mm on left needle (for purl stitches). Or, if you prefer straight needles, one 9mm for knit rows an
8mm needle for purl rows.
Gauge: 10 Stitches x 16 rows in Stockinette Stitch for 10 x 10cm

Abbreviations

K = knit
P = purl
SS = Stockinette Stitch
ssk = slip slip knit: slip 2 stitches knit wise, pass them back onto the left needle and knit them
together through the back look
k2tog = knit two together
M = make one: pick up the string between two stitches from front to back, knit through the back
loop

Edge Stitch: to achieve a clean finish on the sides of you knit we will be using an Edge stitch. On
ALL rows, slip the first stitch purlwise (with yarn in front) and knit the last stitch

Back:

Cast on 58 stitches on 8mm needles in Colour 1 and work 5 rows of 1 x 1 rib stitch

On row 6, change the right needle to a 9mm needle and continue working in SS. On row 6 only
increase 14 stitches evenly as follows:

K2, M1, K5
*M1, K4* 11 times

You will now have 72 stitches on your needle.

Knit 17 rows more in Colour 1.


Knit 22 rows of SS in Colour 2
Knit 22 rows of SS in Colour 3
Knit 22 rows of SS in Colour 4

BO and set aside OR put live stitches on a piece of scrap yarn and set aside.

Right Front:

Cast on 29 stitches in Colour 1 using 8mm needles and knit 5 rows of 1 x 1 rib stitch.

On row 6, change the right needle to a 9mm needle and continue working in SS. On row 6 only
increase 9 stitches evenly as follows:

K1, M1, K4
*M1, K3* 6 times
M1, K4, M1, K2

38 Stitches on needles

Knit 17 more rows of SS in Colour 1.


Knit 22 rows of SS in Colour 2
Knit 21 rows of SS in Colour 3

On row 64 (right side row) we will begin decreasing for the neckline. Decreases are worked as
follows: slip first stitch purl wise (edge stitch), knit 1stitch, slip 2 stitches knit wise, pass them back
onto the left needle and knit them together through the back look (ssk)

Now decrease on every 3rd row. This means you will be alternating the decreases between knit
and purl rows.

The next decrease will therefore be on row 67 which is the first row of Colour 4.

The purl decreases are worked as follows:purl all stitches until only 4 remain on the left needle
then slip 2 stitches knitwise onto the right needle, pass them back onto the left needle and purl 2
together through the back loop, purl one stitch, knit one (edge stitch).

Work decreases a total of 7 times on the following rows:


64: Colour 3, Knit row decrease (KRD)
67: C4, Purl row (PRD)
70: C4, KRD
73: C4, PRD
76: C4, KRD
79: C4, PRD

Continue knitting in Stockinette stitch for 6 more rows.

BO and set aside OR put live stitches on a piece of scrap yarn and set aside.

Left Front

Cast on 29 stitches in Colour 1 using 8mm needles and knit 5 rows of 1 x 1 rib stitch.

On row 6, change the right needle to a 9mm needle and continue working in stockinette stitch.
On row 6 only increase 9 stitches evenly as follows:

K1, M1, K4
*M1, K3* 6 times
M1, K4, M1, K2

38 Stitches on needles

Knit 17 more rows of Stockinette Stitch in Colour 1.


Knit 22 rows of Stockinette Stitch in Colour 2
Knit 21 rows of SS in Colour 3

On row 64 (right side row) we will begin decreasing for the neckline. Decreases are worked as
follows: slip first stitch purl wise (edge stitch), Knit until 3 stitches remain on the left needle then
k2tog. (37 Stitches on needle)

Now decrease on every 3rd row. This means you will be alternating the decreases between knit
and purl rows.

The next decrease will therefore be on row 67 which is the first row of Colour 4.

The purl decreases are worked as follows: slip first stitch purl wise (edge stitch), p2tog, purl until
only one stitch remains on the needle, k1 (edgestitch)

Work decreases a total of 7 times on the following rows:


64: Colour 3, Knit row decrease (KRD)
67: C4, Purl row (PRD)
70: C4, KRD
73: C4, PRD
76: C4, KRD
79: C4, PRD
82: C4, KRD

Continue knitting in SS for 6 more rows.

BO and set aside OR put live stitches on a piece of scrap yarn and set aside.

Now we will attach the two front pieces to the back piece. If you have bound off your pieces,
place both side pieces on to the back, right sides together and join using a mattress stitch.

If your pieces still have live stitches, put them back on to 8mm needles and use the three needle
bind -off to join them together. If you haven’t done this before just google “3 needle bind-off”and
there are lots of videos explaining how to do this.

The cardigan is now joined together at the shoulders but the side seams are still open. We will
now be picking up stitches for the sleeves along the side seams.

Sleeves

Right Sleeve

Starting on the side of Colour Stripe 3 on the back piece pick up 60 stitches along the open side
seam in Colour 1. You will start 2/3 of the way up colour stripe 3, pick up all along the side of
colour stripe 4 on the back piece, all along the side of colour stripe 4 on the front piece and along
the first 1/3rd of colour stripe 3 on the front piece.

*You now have 60 stitches on your needle.

Knit 15 more rows of this colour in Stockinette Stitch.

Change colour and knit 6 rows of SS in Colour 2

Change colour and knit 6 rows of SS in Colour 1

Change colour and knit 6 rows of SS in Colour 2

Change colour and knit 6 rows of SS in Colour 1

Change colour and knit 4 rows of SS in Colour 2. On the 5th row (right side row) k2tog throughout
the row (30 sts on needle). Knit one more row of SS (so row 6 which is a purl row).

Change to colour 1 and change the 9mm right needle to an 8mm needle (both needles are now
8mm). You will now decrease a further 10 stitches as follows:

K1,
*k2tog, k1* 9 times,
k2tog,
Now switch to 1 x 1 rib stitch (first row will be a wrong side row) and knit a further 7 rows of
ribbing. Bind off loosely. *

Left Sleeve

Starting on the side of Colour Stripe 3 on the front piece pick up 60 stitches along the open side
seam in Colour 1. You will start 2/3 of the way up colour stripe 3, pick up all along the side of
colour stripe 4 on the front piece, all along the side of colour stripe 4 on the back piece and
along the first 1/3rd of colour stripe 3 on the back piece.

Now repeat from * to * of the right sleeve.

Finishing off

Sew up both side seams using a mattress stitch and weave in loose ends neatly.
