Modern tennis began in the 1870s in England, with some small changes to the rules and scoring.
In 1877, the All England Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, held a tennis tournament for which,
22 players signed up. (3) For the first few years, only men could take part, but, from
11884, there was a tournament at Wimbledon for women, too. (4) itwasn't until the
carly 20th century that they were able to start wearing clothes that were more suitable for sport, e.g
shorter dresses with short sleeves.
The rules of modem tennis are the same today as they were in the 19th century, apart from one ~

The longest match on record took place there in 2010 between a player from the United States, John
Isner, and the French player Nicolas Mahut. It lasted for 11 hours and 5 minutes, with the American

They had to play wearing long dresses with long sleeves, and hats.
Successful players made lots of money from tennis even in the 1800s.
In fact, that court still exists today.
However, at Wimbledon, this rule doesn’t apply.
Tennis became popular in the USA, too, although with different rules.
