Laura's Skills Improvement from Placement

Here are the 5 keys to success in the IELTS Listening test: 1. Build your vocabulary - You need to know common IELTS words to understand what you hear. 2. Use preparation time effectively - Mark keywords and predict answers before the recording starts. 3. Understand synonym language - The questions may use different words than the recording, so you must comprehend synonyms. 4. Manage your pacing - Keep track of your current question and the next so you don't fall behind. 5. Get off to a strong start - Do well on the easier Sections 1 and 2 to be on track for Band 5.5 or higher after those parts.

Fundamentals of IELTS Listening

14
Fundamentals
Introduction

mastership.co Learn from the world’s best IELTS course. 15

Basics

● 40 minutes total
○ 30 minutes to answer Sections 1-4 and 10 minutes for transferring your answers
● 4 sections total (10 questions per section) - gets progressively difficult
● All questions in all 4 sections always go in order
● You will hear each recording only once!
● All questions are variations of either Multiple Choice or Fill-in-the-Blanks
● This is a “listening comprehension” test, which tests your ability to understand
synonym language!
● It’s not a straightforward listening test. You need strategy and tactics to succeed.
16
Basics

● Answers can be spread out or be very close together!

● When you believe you’ve heard an answer, move your attention to the next question.
But listen closely to avoid traps!
● Must write your answer immediately on the test booklet - No time to take notes!
● Never try to memorize the answers as you take the test!
● You are expected to know how to spell common English names (Mary, John, Kate, etc.).
You can find a list of such common names online.
● Spelling must be perfect
● If you missed any questions, just move on and guess the answer at the end
17
Section 1 ● Conversation between two speakers
● Set in everyday social context
● Example: A conversation about travel
arrangements, booking accommodation, or
decisions on a night out

18
Section 2 ● Monologue (i.e. speech by one person)
● Set in everyday social context
● Example: A speech about student services
on a University campus or arrangements for
meals during a conference

19
Section 3 ● Conversation between up to 4 people
● Set in an educational or academic context
● Example: A conversation between a tutor
and a student about an assignment or
between three students planning a research
project

20
Section 4 ● Monologue (i.e. speech by one person)
● Set in an educational or academic context
● Example: A lecture or talk about general
academic interest such as a university
lecture

21
5 Keys to Success

1. Vocabulary: You need to know IELTS vocabulary or you won’t succeed!

2. Prep Time: Use prep time effectively to mark keywords and predict answers
3. Synonym Language: You must be able to understand synonym language
4. Pacing: Keep an eye on your current question and the next question! When
you get your answer, move your attention to the next question.
5. Strong Start: Do great on Sections 1 & 2, so that by the time you get to
Section 3, you already have a Band 5.5 on the Listening test. Then when you
get to Sections 3 and 4 (which are more difficult), you can score a 7+ Band!

My tutor said you might be able to help me with it.
PROFESSOR: Yes, I got a copy of your drawings. Come in

we have to come up with a new design for a typical

B. adapt an existing energy-saving appliance

PROFESSOR: I see, and are there any special conditions?

Does it have to save energy for example?

innovative approach to existing technology, using it in a
way that hasn't been thought of before.

I'm interested in a career in occupational psychology in a

TIM: What kind of skills do you think you developed on
the placement? I mean, apart from the ones you already
had ... Did you have to do all the artwork for the

I did have to use my IT skills to a certain extent because I

didn't involve anything I hadn't done before.

TIM: Do you think you got any better at managing your

time and prioritising things? You always used to say you
had trouble with that...

LAURA: Oh, definitely. There was so much pressure to

meet the project deadline. And I also got better at
explaining things and asserting my opinions...

Words Today, I want to talk about self-regulatory focus theory
and how the actions of leaders can affect the way
followers approach different situations. Self-regulatory
focus theory is a theory developed by Tori Higgins. He
says that a person's focus at any given time is to either
approach pleasure or avoid pain. These are two basic
motivations that each and every one of us has, and they
cause us to have different kinds of goals. Promotion goals
in different life situations emphasise achievement.
Prevention goals are oriented towards the avoidance of
punishment. It is easy to misspell this word as
‘acheivement’ or ‘achievment’

Welcome to Manham Port, where a thousand years of history are brought to life. All the
family can enjoy a day out at Manham; visit our copper mine, see models of the machinery it
used, have your photo taken in nineteenth-century costume, experience at first hand how
people lived at different stages throughout history, and especially how children studied,
worked and played. The port of Manham is located in beautiful and peaceful countryside, on
a bend in the great River Avon, and developed here because it's the highest navigable point
of the Avon - boats can go no higher up this river - and proved a handy place to load and
unload cargo to and from the sea, which is over 23 miles away.

A small port was already established here when, about 900 years ago, tin was discovered
nearby, though it wasn't until the Industrial Revolution, when a tremendous need for metals
of all kinds developed, that Manham expanded to become one of the busiest ports in the
country. And because it was already so busy, prospectors began to look for other minerals,
and by the end of the nineteenth century, lead, copper, manganese and arsenic were added
to the cargos leaving Manham.

In the early days, the ores had been smelted — or processed — in the same area they were
mined. But, as demand grew, the smelting process required huge factory furnaces or fires to
melt the metal from the rock and there was not enough coal in the local area, so the rocks
containing minerals had to be shipped long distances.

MAN: In the upstairs cupboard, you'll find the water heater. You'll see three main controls
on the left at the bottom of the heater. The first one - the round one on the far left - is the
most important one for the heating and hot water. It's the main control switch. Make sure
it's in the 'on' position. The switch itself doesn't light up, but the little square below will be
black if the switch is 'off.' 105

LAURA: We hired the services of a professional photographer for that. I did have to use my
IT skills to a certain extent because I cut and pasted text from marketing leaflets, but that
didn't involve anything I hadn't done before.
TIM: Do you think you got any better at managing your time and prioritising things? You
always used to say you had trouble with that ...
LAURA: Oh, definitely. There was so much pressure to meet the project deadline. And I also
got better at explaining things and asserting my opinions, because I had to have weekly
consultations with the marketing manager and give him a progress report.

Today we continue our series on ecology and conservation with a look at a particularly
endangered member of the black bear family. One in ten black bears is actually born with a
white coat, which is the result of a special gene that surfaces in a few. Local people have
named it ‘the spirit bear'. And according to the legends of these communities, its snowy fur
brings with it a special power. Because of this, it has always been highly regarded by them —
so much that they do not speak of seeing it to anyone else. It is their way of protecting it
when strangers visit the area.

Synonym Language
The white bear's habitat is quite interesting. The bear's strong relationship with the
old-growth rainforest is a complex one. The white bear relies on the huge centuries-old
trees in the forest in many ways. For example, the old-growth trees have extremely long
roots that help prevent erosion of the soil along the banks of the many fish streams.
Keeping these banks intact is important because these streams are home to salmon, which
are the bear's main food source. In return, the bear's feeding habits nurture the forest. As
the bears eat the salmon, they discard the skin and bones in great amounts on the forest
floor, which provide vital nutrients. These produce lush vegetation that sustains thousands
of other types of life forms, from birds to insects and more. Today, the spirit bear lives off
the coast of the province of British Columbia on a few islands. Complex Word (silent letter)

Final Tips for Your

Success

126
Final Tips
What to do before your exam…

mastership.co Learn from the world’s best IELTS course. 127

The Day Before the Test

● Lightly review any content you’re still struggling with

○ Don’t use this day (or night) as an intense study session
○ Spend no more than 1-2 hours for review
○ Use this day to relax and refresh your mind and body
● Know where the test is and how to get there
○ Check the map and make sure you know how long it will take to get there
● Don’t stay up at night to prepare for your exam! Get a good night’s sleep
○ Research shows that students who sleep at least seven hours the night before a
test typically score higher than those who get only six hours of sleep.
○ Get as much sleep as you need to feel well rested and prepared for your test.
128
The Day Before the Test

● Set an alarm (or two or three)

○ Try not to set more than three alarms, and keep them at most 10-15 minutes
apart so that you don't end up accidentally oversleeping.
● Get together everything you’ll need for the test
○ Prepare all the materials you’ll need for your test the night before
○ So what do you need to bring to the test?

129
What things to bring for the IELTS exam?

● Your original and valid passport.

○ Driving licences and student IDs are not accepted as identification.
● Print out of the confirmation email for the test
○ This document will be stamped
● 2 colored photocopies of your passport
○ In case you have not sent the photocopies or uploaded them with your
application
● 4 colored passport-sized photographs of yourself
○ In case the photo uploaded in the registration form is not clear
130
What things to bring for the IELTS exam?

● Stationary items
○ Carry your own pencils, sharpener, erasers and pens (ballpoint pen with
black/blue ink) in case your test center does not provide them
● Water bottle (optional)
○ Should be transparent without any writing or labels on it
○ Not allowed in some test centers. In this case, a water facility will most probably
be available.
● Snacks (optional)
○ Not allowed in the test room, but you can eat while waiting to go into the
examination hall (sometimes, it can be a long wait)
131
The Day of the Test

● Eat a healthy, filling breakfast

○ Good brain foods to eat before a test include:
■ Whole grains (oatmeal, granola, quinoa, etc.)
■ Fresh fruit and vegetables

● Confirm that you have everything you need to take with you to the test
● Be on time
○ Aim to get to your test center at least 30 minutes before your test
○ If you arrive after the test starts, you will not be allowed to take the test
● Go to the bathroom
○ Use the restroom before leaving your house
132
Right Before the Test

● Gotta pee?
○ Use bathroom before the test, as there are no bathroom breaks in the exam.
○ To use the restroom during the test, raise your hand to ask the examiner.
○ Don’t go during your listening test, because the listening test will not stop and
you will miss the answers (and get a lower score as a result).
○ If you must, then go to the toilet during your reading or writing test.
● Stay calm and positive
○ It’s normal to feel nervous before an exam, just relax and do your best
○ Focus on deep breathing to calm your nerves and reduce your anxiety
○ If possible, stretch your arms and legs to get your blood flowing.
