Experiment - Salt Analysis Ammonium Acetate

The document describes an experiment to identify the cation and anion in a salt through a series of chemical tests. Physical tests showed the salt was white, water soluble, and smelled like ammonia, indicating the possible presence of NH4+. Wet tests found no reaction with dilute sulfuric acid but a pungent vinegar smell with concentrated sulfuric acid, confirming the anion as CH3COO-. Further tests such as the ester test and reaction with ferric chloride also supported this. Tests with sodium hydroxide produced an ammonia smell and fumes with hydrochloric acid, confirming the cation as NH4+. The salt was determined to contain the cation NH4+ and anion CH3COO-.

Experiment-8

Aim:- To analysis the given salt and identify one cation and one anion present in it.
Material Required:- Test tube, Test tube holder, Test tube stand, Distilled water and organic
compound.

S.No. Experiment Observation Inference

1 Physical Test:-
(i) Colour White Colour Cu2+,Fe2+,Co2+, Ni2+,
Mn2+ are absent
(ii) Smell Ammonia like smell NH4+ may be
present
(iii) Solubility Water soluble Water soluble ions
are present
2 Dry Test:-
Flame Test No distinct colour of Ca+2, Sr+2, Ba+2, Cu+2
the flame seen may be absent
3 Wet Test (Test for anion):-
(i) Salt + dil. H2SO4 No reaction Dil. radical group
is absent
(ii) Salt + cons. H2SO4 Pungent vapour with CH3COO- may be
vinegar- like smell present.
Confirmatory Test:-
(i) Ester test:- Salt + con. H2SO4 + ethanol Fruity smell of ester CH3COO- is
confirmed
(ii) Ferric chloride test:- Aqueous Brick red colour which CH3COO- is
solution + FeCl3 (aq) is dissolved in dil. HCl confirmed
4 Test for Cation:-
Salt + NaOH Pungent ammonia Zero group radical
like smell may be present
Confirmatory Test:-
(i) Above solution + a glass rod dipped in con. Dense white fumes Ammonia is
HCl is brought near mouth of test tube present conformed
(ii) Nessler's reagent test: Aqueous solution + Brown /orange ppt Ammonia is
NaOH + Nessler's reagent conformed

Result- In the given salt cation is NH4+ and anion is CH3COO-.

Precaution:-
1. Handle the test tube with the help of test tube holder.
2. Handle the glass apparatus carefully.
3. Wash the test tube before use.
4. Use all the chemicals carefully.
