SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY
LEARNING
OUTCOMES
These are the things that you
will have to develop while
studying this module. Let's
learn them one-by-one.
In this module challenge yourself to:
distinguish the interdependence of
science technology and society ;
determine the purpose and limitations of
science and technology which affected the
society ; and
discuss the effects of scientific and
technological advances in the society and
environment.
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY
COURSE
OVERVIEW
Hi! I am Albert, your Module Guide
and I will be joining you on your
course journey. Now let's talk
about the course rundown.
This section includes the definition of Science,
Technology and Society. It further discusses the
description of Science and Technology as both a
Process and a Product. It also touches the purposes,
limitations and importance of Science and Technology
as well as the different requirements for technological
innovations.

EXPLORE
DEFINING SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY &
SOCIETY
Hi! I am Benjamin. Before we begin I want to learn about
your thoughts. On your Journal, Write a brief definition of
Science Technology and Society basing from your own ideas.
I hope you enjoy this part of your lesson!
What is Science?
The word Science comes from Latin word
"scientia"meaning "knowledge" and in the broadest
sense it is any systematic knowledge-base or
prescriptive practice capable of resulting in prediction.
"knowledge covering general truths of the operation of
general laws, esp. as obtained and tested through
scientific method and concerned with the physical
world."
The subject matter of Science is Nature. which means
that every physical entity in the terrestrial and extra
terrestrial environment is a component of nature.
Science is the interpreter of nature and man is the
interpreter.
What is Technology?
The word technology comes from two Greek words,
transliterated techne and logos.
Techne means art, skill, craft, or the way, manner, or
means by which a thing is gained.
Logos means word, the utterance by which inward
thought is expressed, a saying, or an expression.
So, literally, technology means words or discourse
about the way things are gained.
The term ‘Technology” is wide, and everyone has their
way of understanding its meaning. We use technology
to extend our abilities, making people the most crucial
part of any technological system.
What is Society?
A society is a group of individuals involved in
persistent social interaction, or a large social group
sharing the same spatial or social territory, typically
subject to the same political authority and dominant
cultural expectations.
SCIENCE AS A PROCESS AND A
PRODUCT
As a Process Science :
(a) is concerned with discovering relationships between
observable phenomenon in terms of theories;
(b) is a systematized theoretical inquiries;
(c) seeks for truth about nature;
(d) It is determined by observation, hypothesis, measurement,
analysis and experimentation;
(e) is the description and explanation of the development of
knowledge;
(f) is the study of beginning and end of everything that exist;
(g) is the conceptualization of new ideas, from the abstract to
the particular; and
(h) a kind of human culture.
Can you think a specific task that requires the use of
Science as a process? Write your answers on your
Journal.
As a Product Science :
(a) is a systematized, organized body of knowledge based on
facts or truths and observations;
(b) is a set of logical and empirical methods which provide for
the systematic observation of empirical phenomena;
(c) is a source of cognitive authority;
(d) is concerned with verifiable concepts;
(e) is a product of the mind;
(f) is the variety of knowledge, people, skills organizations,
facilities, techniques, physical resources, methods and
technologies that taken together and in relation with one
another;
HI there! I am curious about your ideas, how can we
say that science is a product of the mind?
Can you think of some scientific products that was
developed through a systematized, organized body of
knowledge based on facts or truths and observations?
if yes can you enumerate and explain how are these
products helping you today.
Write your answers on your Journal.
TECHNOLOGY AS A PROCESS AND
A PRODUCT
As a Process Technology:
(a) is the application of science;
(b) is the practice, description, and terminology of
applied sciences;
(c) is the intelligent organization and manipulation of
materials for useful purposes;
(d) is the means employed to provide for human needs
and wants;
(e) is focused on inventing new or better tools and
materials or new and better ways of doing things;
(f) s a way of using findings of science to produce new
things for a better way of living;
(g) searches for concrete solutions that work and give
wanted results;
(h)is characteristically calculative and imitative, tends
to be dangerously manipulative; and
(i) a form of human cultural activity
As a Product Technology:
(a) is a system of know-how, skills, techniques and
processes;
(b) is like a language, rituals, value, commerce and
arts, it is an intrinsic part of a cultural system and it
both shapes and reflects the system values;
(c) is the product of the scientific concept;
(d) is the complex combination of knowledge
materials and methods;
(e) is said to be the material products of human making
or fabrication; and
(f) is a total societal enterprise.
HI there! I am curious about your ideas! Do you think
Technology is an integral part of our society? Justify
your answer. Write your answers on your Journal.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SCIENCE
TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY
HI there! I am curious about your ideas! Why do
you think it's important to learn things about STS?
Write your answers on your Journal.
The interdisciplinary field of Science, Technology, and
Society Studies examines the ways in which society
influences the creation of scientific knowledge and
technological development. At the same time, it seeks to
understand the ways science and technology affect our
lives and communities. These perspectives, combined with
complementary education in a traditional discipline, prepare
the STS student for graduate study or for a wide range of
career opportunities. Upon graduation students might use
their skills in government, business, or non-profit sectors in
policy analysis, planning, or research.
It would train students with the professional skills needed
to become players in science and technology policy. Some
programs came to emphasize quantitative methodologies,
and most of these were eventually absorbed into systems
engineering. Others emphasized sociological and
qualitative approaches, and found that their closest kin
could be found among scholars in science, technology, and
society departments.
THE PURPOSE OF SCIENCE
TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY
HI there! I am curious about your ideas! As
students do you already know your purpose in life?
do you really think having a purpose can make
one's life better? Discuss your answer with a
classmate.
To improve quality of human condition.
To provide solution to our practical problems.
To establish relevant institutional linkages and
essential mechanisms
To develop individual knowledge.
To find order in the chaos of nature and deliver
personal and social liberation
To give an information and explanation of
the natural world.
To develop new areas of knowledge.
To combat irrationality.
To maintain the availability of natural resources.
THE LIMITATIONS OF SCIENCE &
TECHNOLOGY
[Link] concerns. It cannot help us with
questions about the God, the ultimate Good, and Truth.
[Link] concerns. Immaterial and
transcendental nature is beyond the grasp of scientific
inquiry.
3. Axiological concerns. It cannot answer questions
about value.
4. Dependent on the values and personal beliefs of
those who use it.
[Link] of natural resources that are being used in
science and technology are limited.
[Link] is limited to the physically observable.
[Link] rest on past observations
[Link] all of its principles are applicable to different
world phenomena.
[Link] human intervention to carry out its functions
properly.
[Link] can predict forces of nature but it cannot prevent
the prevent the prevalence/occurrence.
[Link] guarantee an ultimate solution to any
specific problem.
[Link] fully explain what is in the mind of a
person.
