Quadratic Equations Performance Task

This document is a performance task from Assumpta Academy for their Grade 9 mathematics students. It contains two word problems involving quadratic equations. The first problem models the height of a rocket over time and asks students to find the height at a given time and the time when the rocket will hit the ground again. The second problem describes a rectangular function room with tiles covering part of the floor and asks students to write expressions for the dimensions of the tiled area, formulate and solve a quadratic equation to determine the tile width, and state the uncovered floor width. Students are to show their work and solutions.

Mathematics 9

NAME:___________________________________ SCORE:_______________
GRADE/SECTION:__________________________ DATE: Sept.29 - Oct. 04, 2021

STRICTLY REMINDER: Late submission without valid reason/s will be deducted to your
Performance Task grade.

Direction: Solve the following problems involving quadratic equation by extracting

square roots, factoring, completing the square and quadratic formula.
Show your complete solution.

1. The height, y meter, of a model rocket launched directly upwards from the
ground can be modeled by y = 96t - 4t2, where t is time in seconds after it leaves
the ground.

i. Find the height of the rocket 12 seconds after it leaves the ground.
Solution:

Answer:_______________________________________

ii. At what time will the rocket strike the ground again?

i. Given that the part of the floor which is not covered by the tiles has a
uniform width of xm, write down an expression, in terms of x, for the
length and the breadth of the floor covered by the tiles.
Solution:

Answer:_______________________________________

ii. Given that the floor area covered by the tiles is 400m2, formulate an
equation in x and show that it reduces to 2x2 - 57x + 185 = 0.
Solution:
