MID-TERM TEST – OCTOBER 26, 2021

– THE METHODOLOGY OF TEACHING ENGLISH IN LOWER PRIMARY 1
total: 35 points

1. Write two questions that you think should go on the mid-term test for this course. (4 points) You
may choose to answer your own questions instead of two test questions that I set. If you decide to
do so, please indicate which items you wish to replace with your questions.
What is TPR?
- Total Physical Response, the idea of TPR is to create a neural link between speech and
action.

What do you know about the critical period hypothesis?

- Acquisition theories say that adults do not acquire languages as well as children
because of external and internal factors, not because of a lack of ability.

2. What conditions need to be provided if we want to ensure that the advantages of early foreign
language development manifest? (In other words, under what conditions does an early start not
fulfill its promise?) Name at least two. (2 points)
- Everyday conversations
-

3. What do we mean by saying that “primary teachers develop children holistically”? (2 point)
Holistic learning allows for children to develop strong internal values and confidence
because their whole being is considered during the learning process.

4. How are first graders (age 6-7) different from fourth graders (age 10-11) in their general age-
specific characteristics? Name two differences. (2 points)
They learn difficult ways. Age 6-7 is like learning by songs or rhymes. Age 10-11, they
become shy and they don’t want to talk, because they have lower self-esteem.

5. What do we mean by saying that “children are capable of learning a foreign language
indirectly”? What classroom practices should we apply and what should we avoid to support
indirect learning? (3 points)
We should avoid translation, because they can pick up the language.

Activity??

6. Compare language acquisition and language learning along the following aspects: 1) what is the
main focus (what does teaching/language development focus on mostly)? 2) how is error
correction viewed? 3) how is communication viewed? (3 points)
Language acquisition linguistic function
Language learning. linguistic form

Language acquisition: we don’t correct the mistakes

Language learning. It’s important to correct the mistakes

Language acquisition: process oriented

Language learning. product oriented
7. What hypotheses did Krashen set up concerning the Natural Approach to foreign language
acquisition? List at least four of them. Then choose one and explain what it means. (2 points + 3
points)
- Keep the affective filter low
- Give priority to language acquisition
- Remember the natural order of acquisition
- Understand the role of Monitor
To monitor understanding means to be aware of your thoughts as you are reading

8. What should our priorities be when teaching English to young learners concerning attitude and
motivation? (2 points)

9. What language input should the primary ELT teacher provide in terms of quality, quantity, usage
and content? (2 points)
The ELT teaching is the role-model where students should talk a lot with accurate
pronunciation and correct grammar

10. In general, it is considered good practice to use English (the target language) as our classroom
language. When is it useful or advised to use the mother tongue? Give at least two
conditions/situations. (2 points)
- In emergency situations
-

11. What basic principles does the communicative approach in language teaching follow? Name
three. (3 points)
- Provide opportunities for learners to experiment and try out what they know.
- Provide opportunities for learners to develop both accuracy and fluency.
- Link the different skills such as speaking, reading, and listening together, since they
usually occur so in the real world.

12. Why doesn’t the grammar-translation method work as a language teaching method with
children below 10? (2 points)
Because they can’t learn the grammatical rules of the target language, and the grammar-
translation method based on the rules and the structures of the target language

13. How can teaching be more learner-centered? Give at least three ideas/practices. (3 points)
- Allow for student choice and autonomy
- Use open-ended questioning techniques
- Engage in explicit instruction
