The goal of CWTS is to give students an opportunity to contribute to society

through little or small contributions in alleviating the hardships of some members of the
community and to gain a sense of being in touch with the community. During the first
meeting, it was mentioned that we were to go to an indigent community and interact with
them. Although the exact details of the activity are yet to be announced, the gist of it was
basically just that. Even before the first meeting, I expected NSTP to be just like my
previous class in SHS, Immersion, where we went to less privileged people and helped
out without even interacting with them. Back then, we went with Gawad Kalinga and only
carried cements and building equipment. We were able to observe the community for
glimpses at a time. This time we would be given the chance to know the stories of these
individuals and hear what they have to say. CWTS will provide the leeway for me to see
what’s happening in some parts of out society and maybe even see the class struggles
even more clearly. Avenues of events and happenings in the community, news and
documentaries, usually only provide a one-sided passive view on the events around us. I
am only the viewer; I understand the events and that’s it. This program provides an
avenue for students like me, who think we can’t make a difference, make an impact to
other people. There are instances where I get this tinge of social responsibility and moral
obligation to give back to the community I belong to. I want to be more engaged, rather,
involved in the community and to feel connected with our society. I’m living in a bubble
and I think it really is time to finally pop this sphere. Although CWTS phase 1 involves a
lot of classroom lectures, the two immersion activities would be something to really look
forward to.
During the first meeting, the Lasallian Reflection Framework (LRF) was also
discussed and these are the masid-danas, sun-milay, and taya-kilos. Although the
immersion activities primarily focus on the community chosen and the journey of the self,
there still has to be a step-by-step procedure to be followed to fulfill the activity. Masid-
danas refers to observation and experiencing the whole ordeal first hand. Sun-milay
refers to the analysis and reflection of the data gathered during the activity. Taya-kilos
refers to the the committing to the activities and doing something. These terms will
ultimately aid in making the immersion activities more concrete and organized. Compared
to my class back in SHS, the activities in this course have more planning and reflection.
Before, we barely made a scheme and the immersion activities were disorganized and a
bit chaotic.
The topic on the second meeting concerns disaster risk and reduction. I’m all into
those disaster preparation things, so I really listened. I found the stories about the not-so-
recent disasters, the typhoons, to be really enlightening. Disaster brings out the primal
tendencies of man. We are so wrapped up in comfort and familiarity of everyday life that
we forget the dangers that lurk around us. The short clip made me realize that we have
to be prepared during calamities- not just wish and be happy that there might be no
classes for the days. The stories told in class strengthened the necessity of DRRM.
Although disasters are inevitable, we can make the impact lighter.
Based on the two classes, I can say I do not regret picking CWTS for my NSTP.
The activities in the course may change the way I think about certain societal structures
and the way of man, and that’s a good thing.
