Geometry Students' Stats Project

This document outlines an activity for students to conduct mathematics investigations into correlations between different variables. It provides guidelines for students to gather data, analyze it, and write a report of their findings. Students will determine if there are correlations between height and weight or between arm span and foot height. They will collect classmate data, analyze it, and write a paper following an outlined format covering introduction, objectives, literature review, research context, data collection and analysis, findings, and conclusions.

Activity 5. Mathematics Investigation (in Statistics)

1. This is a mathematics investigation under Statistics specifically on

association between two variables. The following specific activities are

assigned for certain groups. It will be up to you how you are going to

assign tasks to your members. Select your leader.

For groups 1-4. I want you to determine if there is a correlation

between height and weight?

For groups 5-8. I want you to determine if there is a correlation

between an arm span and foot height?

2. You will be gathering data from all of your classmates in Math 138.

3. You are going to submit a written article by group following the format

given below. There are questions provided to guide your writing, however

you can add more.

Title - make your own title.

Authors - write your names below the title

I. Introduction

What is the focus of your study?

What is the basis of your interest in this topic or focus?

What are you trying to learn about and understand?

II. Objective/s

What are your specific objective/s for this study?

III. Review of Related Literature

What is the context of previous work that has been done on this

topic?

To what else does the topic relate? What are the areas of research and

specific research studies that relate to your investigation or study?

What are related professional references (research, theory, and/or

practice) that inform you?

IV. Description Of The Research Context

Where was the study conducted and the data gathered?

What is the specific context in which the study was conducted (e.g.

school population, the classroom environment, curriculum, etc.)?

Who were the participants (respondents) in this investigation or

study?

How did you select the participants?

Describe these participants.

V. Data Collection And Analysis

Research design

What is your general approach to research design? (e.g descriptive,

experimental, case study etc.). How and why did I choose this

approach?

Data

What important kinds of data did you collect? What specific

method/s of data collection did you use (e.g. interviewing, secondary

data collection, etc.)?

For each method - What did you do? What did the data look like?

How did you collect it? When? How often? What did you do with it?

Analysis

How did you analyze the data? What did you do to organize and

analyze data as you collected it?

Study Duration/ Timeline of Investigation

What was your research time line? Specify the activities you made

from the start and indicate the duration for each activity. You can use

the Gantt Chart to illustrate and discuss the chart.

VI. Findings/Results and Discussions

In this section you are reporting the findings of the study and so must

stay close to the data in the statements that you make.

Discuss or interpret the result of analysis.

What are the possible implications of these findings for your own

participants or other people. What sense do you make of this study?

VII. Conclusion
