Reflection Paper 3

1. Describe/characterize the Global North and Global South

In the past, global divide visualizes the split of regions where Northern Hemisphere
was identified as Global North and Southern Hemisphere as Global South, presently, it is
no longer exclusively a geographical term. The Global South are now the developing
countries that are mostly agrarian based and are described as newly industrialized or in
the process of industrializing while Global North are the powerful and developed countries
that are technologically advanced, politically stable and wealthy. In terms of level of
productivity, Global South has low levels of living and deprivations, Global North being
the more dominant one has the control on the patterns of international trade with greater
per capita income.

3. Is one exploiting the other? Is one interdependent or dependent on the other?

Exploitation and oppression by Global North can be characterized through


discrimination in black, immigrant and indigenous communities of Global South. Given
North’s power and wealth, the other side of the spectrum are economically and politically
dependent on them yet there exists an interdependent relationship between North-South
in the aspect of globalization. The Global North and South are interdependent with each
other in terms of international trade, also countries of Global North explored branching
their companies to Global South where salary is more low-cost; Global South migrates to
richer countries for employment.

4. What do you think should countries do to create a better and peaceful world?

Peace in between nations is really challenging but attainable as long as the factors
that divide each one of us will become the bridge to connect and interact rather than fight
and exploit. Instead of abusing power over the oppressed, used the economic and
political power to help countries flourish on their own capacity. There should be equality
first and foremost, through United Nations – creation of better policies that would benefit
everyone and avoid disputes, make no division and discrimination on nationality, gender
and race and there should be inter-national cooperation among the countries on their own
initiative.

5. As a student, what can you contribute (no matter how little) in making this world a better
place to live in?

In my own ways, I believe I can be part of a bigger platform in creating a better


world for everyone and that is, first through respect – respecting other people’s beliefs,
recognizing their own culture and religion, and respecting other people’s nationality,
gender and race, all without discrimination. Additionally, kindness can start with me and
can go along way – kindness by helping those in need even at the face of difficulties and
showing compassion by caring about the suffering of other people. Lastly, through
honesty – doing things with integrity even to the smallest act such as school-related work
and communicating openly to others.
