LESSON PROPER
FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION
Communication functions refer to how people use language for different purposes. It is
related to how language is affected by different time, place, and situation.

The five functions of communication are the following:

1. Regulation/Control This works to control someone's behavior or it controls others by

managing their behavior. It can tell someone what to do also. An example can be a doctor's
prescription: "Take your medicine 3times a day." Another one can be parents' instruction to their
child: "Wash the dishes now." and a barangay captain giving an announcement to residents:
"Segregate your garbage at home before bringing to the pickup area."

2. Social Interaction This is used to produce social relationships; used to develop bonds,
intimacy, relations; used to express preferences, desires, needs, wants, decisions, goals and
strengths; used for giving and getting information. Examples: Marriage proposal – "Will you marry
me?"; Invitation–"Would you like some coffee, tea, or me?

3. Motivation This functions to encourage people. It is used to persuade or to try to persuade

another person to change his/her opinion, attitude, or behavior. This is different from regulation
and control where the speaker simply directs others and insists his/her own agenda.
An example is having a listener agree with the speaker that there is a "Pope Francis effect."
Another one is convincing friends to go to the mall after school to watch a movie.

4. Information This functions to convey information. The speaker wants to make others aware of
certain data, concepts, and processes – knowledge that may be useful to them. This may be
something as serious as knowing what the Covid -19 virus is and how to avoid getting it. Another
can be giving an information such as when and where the school enrolment will be held.
A specific example can be "Did you know that there's a secret apartment at the top of Eiffel Tower?

5. Emotional Expression This facilitates people's expression of their feelings and emotions. The
speaker appeals to the listener's feelings and emotions to encourage him/her to act in a particular
direction. Examples are saying appreciations like "I'm so glad that you came into my life." and "I
like you so much." Another one is expressing a need such as "I need you in my life." and "I need
to solve my own problem." Expressing prayers belong to this category. Therefore, a speaker has
five major reasons for communicating, also known as the functions of communication. It must be
remembered that these functions overlap. To regulate or motivate, it is sometimes necessary first
to inform.
Exercise: Find the Words
Familiarize yourself with the elements of communication. Find at least 8 words related to
communication process

NATURE AND PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION

Communication is a process of sharing information and conveying messages or
information from one person to another within and across channels, contexts, media, and cultures
(McCornack, 2014). There is a wide variety of contexts and situations in which communication
can be manifested; it can b e a face-to-face interaction, a phone conversation, a group discussion,

2. Communication occurs between two or more people (the speaker and the receiver)
3. Communication can be expressed through written or spoken words, actions (nonverbal), or
both spoken words and nonverbal actions at the same time.

Elements of Communication
Communication is divided into elements which help us better understand its mechanic or

3. Encoding – the process of converting the message into words, actions, or other forms that the
speaker understands.
4. Channel – the medium or the means, such as personal or non-personal, verbal or nonverbal,
in which the encoded message is conveyed.
5. Decoding – the process of interpreting the encoded message of the speaker by the receiver
6. Receiver – the recipient of the message, or someone who decodes the message
7. Feedback – the reactions, response, or information provided by the receiver
8. Context/Situation – the environment where communication takes place
9. Barrier/noise – the factors that affect the flow of communication

_____6. The receiver sends or provides feedback.

Generalization
Communication is a process of sharing and conveying messages. It is divided into
elements which help us better understand its process. These elements: speaker, message,
encoding, channel, decoding, receiver, feedback, context, and barrier or noise, are present in all
our communication. They combine, interact, and are intertwined in the process of communication.
Everything proceeds smoothly when these elements of communication work properly.
Also, you have learned the five functions of communication. They are regulation or control,
motivation, social interaction, information, and emotional expression. You usually apply these
daily depending on the situation you are in. You must understand that communication becomes
