A Red, Red Rose

by Robert Burns

O, my love is like a red, red rose,

That's newly sprung in June,
O, my love is like the melody,
That's sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonny lass,

So deep in love am I,
And I will love thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt wi' the sun!
And I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only love,

And fare thee weel a wile!
And I will come again, my love,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile!

A3. Abstraction

Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different
from the literal interpretation. When a writer uses literal language, he or she is simply stating
the facts as they are. Figurative language, in comparison, uses exaggerations or alterations to
make a particular linguistic point. Figurative language is very common in poetry, but is also
used in prose and nonfiction writing as well.
Figurative languages include:
Metaphor - a comparison drawn between two or more unlike things
Simile - a comparison drawn between two or more unlike things using the words „like‟ or „as‟
Hyperbole - an exaggeration or impossible statement
Personification - non-human objects or animals are given human characteristics

A4. Application (Group Work)

The students will create a two stanza poem with four lines to express their love towards their
parents using figurative languages.
