I think the evidence that present in this artwork I considered is the clothes that the 3 fish vendors
wear. And it’ll be first sight, you can imagine how look Filipino is.
4. Considering the era it was created, how do you relate it with the social situation prevalent during
that time? Does it signify any message?
I think when the artwork created is the time when other places are being urbanized. And also maybe
this artwork wants to remind us that we really need a discipline in terms of preserving the God’s given
territory and resources. We must put care and even sympathy in order to save the country.

1. Do you consider Juan Luna’s Spoliarium as a Philippine contemporary art? Why?
•It is not a contemporary art in literally, because this kind of happenings are not present in todays generation. But
somehow, in a different way of thinking, this painting is also a contemporary artwork because it shows injustice,
that is still present and happening in our generation.
2.2 Classification – Spoliarium is a Latin word referring to the basement of the Roman Coliseum where the
fallen and dying gladiators are dumped and devoid of their worldly possessions.
2.3 Function- the paint, shows how the Filipinos were treated before when they were colonized by Spaniards.
It shows that they were forced to entertain the Roman oppressors and the Spaniards with their lives and
sacrifice themselves for the Roman's and Spaniard's honor.

entertained the Romans with their lives. Spoliarium awakened and inspired Jose Rizal to carve a mark of his
