1. What is the artwork all about?

Based on the painting, it clearly shows that our country is on the stage of agriculture, it means that the
source of income of most fellow Filipinos in that time are coming on seas and lands.

2. What does the artist want to convey to his/her audience?


I think He wants to convey in this painting that the Philippines is a rich country in terms of natural
resources.

3. What evidence is present in the artwork for you to consider it as a contemporary Philippine art?
I think the evidence that present in this artwork I considered is the clothes that the 3 fish vendors
wear. And it’ll be first sight, you can imagine how look Filipino is.

4. Considering the era it was created, how do you relate it with the social situation prevalent during
that time? Does it signify any message?
I think when the artwork created is the time when other places are being urbanized. And also maybe
this artwork wants to remind us that we really need a discipline in terms of preserving the God’s given
territory and resources. We must put care and even sympathy in order to save the country.

A. What is your chosen subject of art? Explain the reason for selecting
the subject of your coffee painting.
•I choose to paint the “Cross of Christ” because I want to remind the audience of my artwork that there is a God
who really love us. He came to heaven to earth to show the way back to our real identity.

B. How would you classify your art work?


•I classify it as an historical event.

C. How will you define art based from your work?


•Arts represents our thoughts, mind and also our experience in life that we want to share to other through the power
of imagination.

D. Would you consider it as an artwork? Why?


•I considered it as an art work because it’s a coffee painting and painting classify as an art.

E. Aside from coffee, what other medium can be used in creating your artwork?
•Aside of using coffee to create this artwork. I used colored brown pen to highlight the details of my artwork.

F. Is this particular artwork present in your community? In your perspective, why is this medium widely used or
not widely used in your community?
•First, the message of my artwork is all about the sacrifice of Jesus Christ who died on the cross redeemed us. In
the present time, there’s a lot of people does not care about their souls after life. So through this artwork, I want to
used this opportunity to share how the Lord loves us. In conclusion, Coffee painting can use as a medium to give a
meaningful message in your Community.

Direction: Study the painting below and search about its historical background. Then, write an interpretive
statement about it. Be guided by the questions given.

The Spoliarium by Juan Luna

Process Questions:
1. Do you consider Juan Luna’s Spoliarium as a Philippine contemporary art? Why?
•It is not a contemporary art in literally, because this kind of happenings are not present in todays generation. But
somehow, in a different way of thinking, this painting is also a contemporary artwork because it shows injustice,
that is still present and happening in our generation.

2. Describe the artwork based on the following


2.1 Subject of art -Gladiator

2.2 Classification – Spoliarium is a Latin word referring to the basement of the Roman Coliseum where the
fallen and dying gladiators are dumped and devoid of their worldly possessions.

2.3 Function- the paint, shows how the Filipinos were treated before when they were colonized by Spaniards.
It shows that they were forced to entertain the Roman oppressors and the Spaniards with their lives and
sacrifice themselves for the Roman's and Spaniard's honor.

2.4 Appreciation-a painting of bloody slave gladiators being dragged away from the arena where they
entertained the Romans with their lives. Spoliarium awakened and inspired Jose Rizal to carve a mark of his
own glory by writing Noli Me Tangere.

3. Do you like/dislike the artwork? Why?


•I like this artwork because of it’s meaningful Message. Aside of that the one who created it is Juan Luna.

4. What is the value of this artwork to you, to the youth, and to the society?
•The Message of this artwork is all about freedom. It is valuable for us. Not just in the youths but in all citizens of
our country. Lots of our accentor died but their death will not in vain. We are free right now from those who
colonized our country. Therefore we must value the freedom they gave to us and use it for the betterment of our
beloved country.

Reflection:

a. How can you use arts in your daily life?
•I’m not actually an artist but I love doing something creative, maybe through my imagination I uses art in my daily
living.

b. Do you consider yourself as a masterpiece of the Lord’s creation?


Why?
•Definitely Yes, I consider myself as a masterpiece of God. Simply because I believe that He created all the living
and non living creation in the entire universe.
