LESSON 5-WEEK 5

I. COURSE NAME: DISCIPLINES AND IDEAS IN THE SOCIAL

SCIENCES

DEVELOPMENT: LEARNING TASK 1: SELF-DIRECTED ANALYTICAL ESSAY

DIRECTION:

Enhance the understanding of readers by writing an analytical essay about the topic
of your choice. The topic could be a concept, an idea,or any social issue that you intend to
analyze by using sociological perspective: structural functionalism, social conflict theory,
and symbolic interactionism. It is better if you could look for academically proved and
reliable sources that you can site in your essay. You may use a example to support your
point and explain it.

Conflict theories are approaches of social science that highlight social,

political, and economic inequality in a group that criticizes and disrupt
structural functionality and philosophical conservatism in a wider socio-
political institution. Social inequality is an aspect of health status and care
quality. People with deprived social backgrounds are more likely to get the
stress that leads to mental depression because of a lack of healthcare.
(Horwitz, 2012). Mental health services are one of the examples that
showcase the issue of conflict theory.

It is commonly assumed that the natural response to mental issues is to

engage in treatments affecting the mental state. These therapies may
include psychotherapies that change how people interpret the world or
medications that change their neurochemistry. Therefore, the typical
methods of the origin, causes, and treatments of different backgrounds
emphasize an individual characteristic, mood, and action. (Thoits, 2009). As I
stated earlier, the quality of mental healthcare services is indeed different
worldwide. In our care and treatment, we have modified societal inequalities
such as social status, ethnicity, and gender.

ENGAGEMENT: LEARNING TASK 2: ENTITLED ARTIST

Portray a social issue or event in a unique, artistic, or clever manner. It could be in a

form of poem, song, collage or poster or any artistic output. Your work must depict
your understanding of the sociological concept/s of your choice. Use your talent to the
best of your ability. The output must be well organized, clear, and substantive. Include
a brief explanation of the application of concept/s depicted in your work.

The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has influenced sociological

theories. COVID-19 will not be an exception because its social and economic
damage was affected by human safety that is hard to manage and is facing
an extra challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. COVID-19 is clearly
shown as a risk that has been identified by several societal groups such as
the Department of Health. Individuals are obligated to follow rules of social
distancing, wear masks always, and shut down institutions and companies
during quarantine. Additionally, people suffered in staying at home to avoid
infecting a virus.
ASSIMILATION: LEARNING TASK 3: SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION

If you were the President of the Philippines, how would you handle the issues involving
the of COVID-19 pandemic. What would be your priorities and why? Justify your
response by using any of the sociological perspectives that you have learned. You may
have your illustration of your contingency plan.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health crisis that affects all our lives
within approximately 1 million confirmed cases in the Philippines. The
society that the Philippines represent currently encounters multiple
problems, first from the possibility of getting the virus and its consequences
on prolonged health services to the effects on society, education, and
livelihood systems of lockdown restrictions.

If I were the President of the Philippines, the first thing I would do to

prevent COVID-19 from spreading and reducing its impact on fragile
healthcare systems by raising awareness and knowledge. Next is to
implement community precautions such as the practices of applying the
importance of good hygiene and physical distances. The second step that I
would take is supporting our health systems by protecting our frontliners
and provide them enough medical supplies to avoid themselves from getting
a virus. Also, give them the best support to fight this deadly virus. Plus, find
solutions to help Filipino livelihoods and sustaining education via online
classes.
