BIOPHILIC ARCHITECTURE
Letting the light in

Biophilia, a term first coined by E.O.

Wilson in 1984, refers to the
inherent human inclination to
affiliate with nature and seek
connection with the rest of life.
Meaning “love of life or living
system,” biophilia was first used by
Erich Fromm to describe a
psychological orientation of being
attracted to all that is alive and vital. Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science and Practice of
Bringing Buildings to Life
The Pracitce of Biophilic Design
By Stephen R. Kellert, Judith Heerwagen, Martin, 2008

The idea of biophilia originates in an understanding of

human evolution, where for more than 99% of our
species history we biologically developed in adaptive
response to natural not artificial or human created
forces

relationships.

Let there be Light and Sound, Odors, Colors, Movements and Patterns in the building
and in the space.
These elements can be achieved through:

1. Direct Expierence of Nature

2. Indirect Expierence of Nature

3. Expierence of Space and Play
