Bangladesh and their journey
Topic 1 B: Drainage System
Page no. 121-22 (old version)

Rivers
• River originates from a 'source' and
culminates to a sea or lake at its
'mouth'. Along its length it may be
joined by smaller rivers called
'tributaries'. A river and its tributaries
form a 'river system’.
• Bangladesh has predominantly five
major river systems - (1)
the Brahmaputra-Jamuna, (2)
the Ganges-Padma, (3) the Surma-
Meghna, and (4) Tista river system &
(5) Karnaphuli river system

Bengal Basin
• The Bengal Basin is one of the
most extensive sediment
reservoirs in the world and
constitutes the lower floodplain
and delta plain deposits of India
and Bangladesh, at the mouth
of the Ganga–Brahmaputra–
Meghna River systems.
