Vibrations Assignment: SDOF System Analysis

This document provides an assignment on fundamentals of vibrations and free vibration of single degree of freedom systems. It contains two questions. The first question asks students to describe examples of positive and negative impacts of vibration, draw a free body diagram of a vibrating system, formulate the equation of motion, and evaluate the natural frequency. The second question asks students to determine the free vibration response of a system given its equation of motion and initial conditions, and explain how changing the damping constant would affect the response.

Note: PDF file to be submitted should be named as “Vib-A1-StudentID”.

1 a. Describe TWO (2) examples each of positive and negative impacts of

vibration.
[4 marks]

b. A uniform rigid bar OA of length l and mass m pivots at point O, as shown

in FIGURE Q1b. A torsional spring with a spring constant of 𝑘𝑡 and two linear
spring of constants 𝑘1 and 𝑘2 , respectively, are attached to the bar.

FIGURE Q1b

i. Draw the free body diagram of this vibratory system.

[4 marks]

ii. Formulate the equation of motion for this vibratory system. Express the
equation of motion in terms of 𝜃.
[8 marks]

iii. The length l is 1 m, distance a is 0.45 m, mass m is 10 kg, and spring

constants 𝑘𝑡 , 𝑘1 and 𝑘2 are 2 N/m, are 3 N/m and 4 N/m, respectively.
Evaluate the natural frequency of the system.
[4 marks]
2 The equation of motion of a system is described by:
4𝑥̈ + 200𝑥̇ + 2500𝑥 = 0

a. Determine the free-vibration response of the system when the initial

displacement, 𝑥𝑜 is 1 m and initial velocity, 𝑥̇ 𝑜 is -10 m/s.
[7 marks]

b. Evaluate and explain the changes that could be observed in the free-
vibration response of the system when the initial displacement, 𝑥𝑜 , initial
velocity, 𝑥̇ 𝑜 , mass, m and spring constant, k remain the same, while the
damping constant, c is changed to 100 Ns/m.
