Mess & Vendor Relations Committee 2021 - 22: Club Application Form

The document is a club application form for the Mess & Vendor Relations Committee at IIM Ahmedabad. It requests the applicant's personal details and answers to two questions. Vineeth M R applies, noting that as someone from South India he can help source spicy food vendors. He also cites his event management experience. For the case study question, Vineeth proposes social distancing the outdoor tables at the campus Tea post and adding separate counters to reduce crowding, as well as starting a delivery service so people can enjoy tea elsewhere.

7. What makes you the best fit for the team? (Write 3 reasons)

● Coming from Hyderabad and especially south India, I simply love spicy food. In our batch alone
there are more than 50+ students along in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States. I would be
able to contribute in this direction to tingle the taste buds of the IIM A community by
contributing to the process of outsourcing vendors from my experience back at IIT Kharagpur.
● Being the Head of events and the Department Representative at IIT Kharagpur, I have some
demonstrated experience in management and organising things. I believe that this skill of mine
would be challenged while serving the IIMA community through this club.

● I am willing to put time and energy into this club, as the product here is food and I hope I get to
be a part of the very first team to test and taste it.

8. Please read the following caselet

‘Tea post’ is a food outlet in the campus that serves hot beverages and snacks. It is a very popular outlet
in the campus, and you can find all members of the IIMA community (students, faculty members,
administrative staff) visiting the outlet.

Due to its food offering, location and the ambience provided by the outlet, it is a well sought out
destination for people to hangout and gather around. Due to the unfortunate Covid crisis, it was
instructed for community members not to gather around the area and the outlet was instructed to
provide just take away service. After 2 days it was observed that people gradually started gathering
around the stall.

You are a MessComm representative who enquired about the same to the in charge of the outlet and his
response was, ‘We are just giving out take-aways, if the community members decide to hang around, we
are not responsible for it.’ While interacting with a community member present near the shop you get
the comment, ‘It is very frustrating in our rooms, we cannot stay 24/7 in our rooms, need some
recreational time too’.

Being a MessComm representative, how will you handle the situation and what steps would you take
keeping in mind of all the stakeholders in the scenario? (130 - 180 words)

Considering the COVID crisis, the best course of action for this situation would be to remove those
tables which are already there in front of the Tea post and arrange them for the community members in
such a way that there is a reasonable amount of distance between each table required for social
distancing so that we can at least prevent crowding in front of Tea post. Another measure that can be
taken here is we can have separate counters for the products sold by Tea post. Instead of one counter
for all products such as tea, snacks, and other hot beverages, we can create separate counters and
thereby significantly reducing crowding in one place.

We can also start an inhouse delivery service which would reduce the crowding at certain places and
people would be able to enjoy their tea at any other location.
