1. Find the equilibrium conversion for the following elementary reversible reaction, which takes
place in a gas phase PFR. Pure A enters with an initial concentration of 0.305 mol/dm3 and the
equilibrium constant is 0.025 mol2/dm2.
𝐴 ↔ 𝐵 + 2𝐶
2. Ethylene oxide is formed through the partial oxidation of ethylene in the presence of a silver
catalyst:
1
𝐶2 𝐻4 + 𝑂 → 𝐶2 𝐻4 𝑂
2 2
However, ethylene can also undergo a combustion reaction and carbon dioxide is an unwelcome
byproduct.
𝐶2 𝐻4 + 3𝑂2 → 2𝐶𝑂2 + 3𝐻2 𝑂
If 80% (by mole) of the ethylene in the feed stream forms ethylene oxide, 15% forms carbon
dioxide and the remainder is unreacted, calculate,
a) the conversion of ethylene,
b) the yield of ethylene oxide,
c) the selectivity of the ethylene oxide over carbon dioxide production.
3. The following reactions are carried out in a reaction system. What kind of a reactor and at what
temperatures would you use to maximize the production of C with respect to B? C is the desired
product and B is the intermediate product. (CA0 = 4mol/dm3, kB = 1dm3/mol with E=5000 cal/mol
and kC= 2dm3/mol with E=15000 cal/mol at 300K.)
𝐴→𝐵 𝑟𝐵 = 𝑘𝐵 𝐶𝐴2
𝐴 + 𝐵 → 2𝐶 𝑟𝐶 = 𝑘𝐶 𝐶𝐴 𝐶𝐵
4. The following exothermic reaction is run at 1025℃. What is the ΔHr, at that temperature? Is it
still exothermic?
𝐴 + 𝐵 → 2𝑅
Data:
∆𝐻𝑟,298 = −20 000𝐽
𝑗 𝑗
𝐶𝑃𝐴 = 35 𝐶𝑃𝐵 = 45 𝐶𝑃𝑅 = 70 𝐽/𝑚𝑜𝑙𝐾
𝑚𝑜𝑙𝐾 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝐾
5. For the following elementary aqueous reversible reaction, what is the equilibrium conversion
between 273K and 373K? Show with a graph using Excel or Matlab. At what temperature,
conversion would be 70%?
∆𝐺°298 = −14130 𝐽/𝑚𝑜𝑙
𝐴 ↔𝑅 {
∆𝐻°298 = −75300 𝐽/𝑚𝑜𝑙
Data: 𝐶𝑃𝐴 = 𝐶𝑃𝐵 = 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡
6. The relationship between the temperature and conversion is given in the graph. By the help of
energy balances equations, name the adiabatic operating lines shown with ‘?’.

Are to be run in two mixed flow reactors in series anywhere between 10°C and 90°C. If the
reactors may be kept at different temperatures, what should be these temperatures be for
maximum fractional yields of S? Find this fractional yield.
